Getting an insurance license in Mississippi
Mississippi licenses through the Mississippi Insurance Department, which calls the licensee a producer. Which license you need depends on what you intend to sell, and the requirements differ sharply between them.
License types
-
Accident and Health
Sells accident and health cover in Mississippi.
20 hrs
5 courses from $109.95
-
Automobile Club Agent
Sells automobile club service contracts in Mississippi, which are not insurance policies and which the Department licenses anyway. The privilege tax is five dollars, the smallest figure on the Mississippi schedule, and the qualification is that the club endorses the applicant as knowing the difference between its product and a policy.
No course
-
Bail Enforcement Agent
Pursues and surrenders a defendant who has skipped in Mississippi. It shares an application, a fee and a renewal cycle with the soliciting agent, and the state's forty-hour pre-licensing requirement reaches it.
40 hrs
-
Bail Soliciting Agent
Solicits bail bonds in Mississippi for a professional bail agent. It is also the only door to the professional license: nobody may be issued one without three consecutive years holding this, so the forty hours and the paper here are the start of a four-year route rather than the whole of one.
40 hrs
-
Burial Agent
Sells burial insurance in Mississippi. It is the only license on this state's schedule that cannot be applied for online at all: the Department says the application "is not available electronically and must be processed in person or mailed in with fee".
No course
-
Casualty
Sells casualty insurance in Mississippi.
20 hrs
5 courses from $109.95
-
Emergency Independent Adjuster
Adjusts claims for insurers in Mississippi after a declared catastrophe, for at most 180 days, on the certification of an adjuster who is already licensed here. It cannot be renewed at all, and somebody who already holds the ordinary independent adjuster license does not need it.
No course
-
Emergency Public Adjuster
Acts for the insured after a declared catastrophe in Mississippi, for at most 180 days, on the certification of a public adjuster already licensed here. The Department issues an emergency version of both sides of the claim, which few states do.
No course
-
Independent Adjuster Trainee
Learns to adjust claims in Mississippi under somebody who is already licensed to do it. The Department calls this a registration rather than a license, it lasts twelve months, and it cannot be renewed: it is a way in rather than a place to stay.
No course
-
Independent Adjuster
Adjusts claims for insurers in Mississippi. Adjusters are the only Mississippi candidates who may substitute demonstrated experience for the course.
20 hrs
2 courses from $169.95
-
Legal Agent
Acts as agent or representative of a sponsor of prepaid legal services plans in Mississippi. It carries the smallest pre-licensing hour count in the state, three hours, and the only one the Department neither approves nor mentions on its own pre-licensing page: the sponsor the applicant will work for teaches the hours and signs the endorsement.
3 hrs
-
Life
Sells life insurance in Mississippi.
20 hrs
5 courses from $109.95
-
Limited Line Credit Insurance Producer
Sells one or more forms of limited line credit insurance in Mississippi, through a master, corporate, group or individual policy. The Department's own line of authority chart puts two things under the Credit line and nothing else: credit property, and credit life with credit accident and health.
No course
-
Limited Line Self-Storage Insurance Producer
Sells cover on what somebody keeps in a storage unit, and on that property in transit to and from the facility during the rental agreement. Unlike the equivalent licenses in several other states this one is the individual's rather than the facility owner's, and Mississippi issues a business entity version of it separately.
No course
-
Limited Lines Insurance Producer
One Mississippi license carrying eight lines of authority: Industrial Fire, Industrial Life Accident and Health, Surety, Title, Trip Accident and Baggage, Car Rental, Crop Insurance and Travel. Two of the eight are examined and six are not, and the two are examined by different bodies, one of them a funeral insurance company rather than a testing vendor.
No course
-
Limited Lines Travel Insurance Producer
Sells travel insurance in Mississippi and carries the travel retailers who offer it over a counter, on a register the producer keeps and the Department inspects. Travel is also one of the eight lines inside the ordinary Limited Lines Insurance Producer license, which is the Department disagreeing with itself about how many licenses this is.
No course
-
Managing General Agent
Binds ceding reinsurance contracts for an insurer, or runs all or part of an insurer's book as its agent. Mississippi licenses it as a thing in its own right rather than as an indorsement on a producer license, and it cannot be renewed online: the Department takes this one on paper.
No course
-
Peer To Peer Car Sharing Program
Runs the platform that lets one person rent out their own car to another in Mississippi. The Department calls this one a permit rather than a license and issues it to an individual or to an entity, which is the opposite way round from the transportation network company beside it.
No course
-
Personal Lines
Sells the household half of property and casualty in Mississippi.
20 hrs
5 courses from $109.95
-
Portable Electronics Insurance Producer
Lets a vendor of phones and other portable devices sell cover on them in Mississippi. It costs five thousand dollars, which is fifty times the ordinary producer license and the joint largest figure on the Mississippi schedule, and like the third party administrator it exists only as a business entity license.
No course
-
Private Review Agent
Decides whether somebody else's medical care was necessary and appropriate in Mississippi. It is the newest thing the Insurance Department certifies and it did not used to be the Department's at all: the Prior Authorization Reform Act moved it across from the State Department of Health on 1 July 2024.
No course
-
Professional Bail Agent
Writes bail bonds in Mississippi on double the producer requirement, in two kinds the Department licenses differently. A Limited Surety agent is appointed by an insurer by power of attorney; a Personal Surety agent posts $30,000 of their own. And nobody reaches either without three consecutive years as a soliciting bail agent first, which is a ladder rather than an entry requirement: the junior license is a real license and the three years are served holding it.
40 hrs
-
Property
Sells property insurance in Mississippi.
20 hrs
5 courses from $109.95
-
Public Adjuster Trainee
Learns to act for the insured in Mississippi under a licensed public adjuster who employs and supervises them. A registration rather than a license, twelve months, not renewable.
No course
-
Public Adjuster
Adjusts claims on behalf of policyholders in Mississippi. Adjusters are the only Mississippi candidates who may substitute demonstrated experience for the course.
20 hrs
-
Reinsurance Intermediary Manager or Broker
Binds or manages all or part of a reinsurer's assumed business as its agent. Mississippi issues one license here where most states issue two, the manager's and the broker's: the application, the instruction sheet and the fee are all single, and the Department's own definition runs the two roles together in a single sentence.
No course
-
Risk Retention Agent
Sells for a risk retention group in Mississippi. Its instruction sheet is six numbered lines and its license year runs 1 June to 31 May, which no other Mississippi license does: the producer lines run on the applicant's birth month, the automobile club on 1 April, and the burial and legal agents on 1 March.
No course
-
Supervising General Agent
Serves as trustee, manager or administrator for a licensed insurer or its insureds in running an insurance program the insurer underwrites. The Department's definition excludes attorneys at law by name, and the license comes with a prohibition rather than a permission: it does not let the holder sell to the public.
No course
-
Surplus Lines Insurance Producer
Places Mississippi business with insurers the state has not admitted. A resident cannot reach it without the property and casualty producer license underneath it and at least one appointment with an admitted property and casualty insurer, and a nonresident who holds the equivalent at home needs neither.
No course
-
Temporary Insurance Producer
A short producer license Mississippi issues by arrangement rather than on demand. The Department publishes the application and one instruction beside it: contact us before applying.
No course
-
Temporary Limited Lines Insurance Producer
The limited lines version of the same thing, on the same $100 fee and the same instruction to ring the Department first.
No course
-
Third Party Administrator
Collects premiums or settles claims on Mississippians for somebody else's insurance or self-funded plan. It is a business entity license only: the Department publishes no individual version of it, and it asks for a financial statement affidavit and a Mississippi-specific company information form on top of the national application.
No course
-
Transportation Network Company
Runs the digital network that connects a driver to a prearranged ride in Mississippi. The Insurance Department licenses the platform itself, not the driver, and charges five thousand dollars for it.
No course
-
Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products
A line of authority on the Mississippi insurance producer license, listed by the Department beside Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty and Personal Lines. It has no examination of its own and no pre-licensing hours of its own: neither the Department's list of examinations nor its table of required hours has a variable row.
No course
-
Viatical Settlement Provider
Buys life insurance policies from their owners in Mississippi. What sets its application apart is a document from a regulator that is not an insurance regulator: a certificate of registration or exemption under the Mississippi Securities Act, issued by the Secretary of State.
No course
-
Viatical Settlement Representative or Broker
Negotiates viatical settlement contracts for the owner of a life policy in Mississippi. One license covers the representative and the broker, individual and business entity are priced the same, and the regulation behind it has been in force since 2000.
No course
-
Workers Comp Adjuster
Adjusts workers compensation claims in Mississippi. Adjusters are the only Mississippi candidates who may substitute demonstrated experience for the course.
20 hrs
Is a course required?
Mississippi requires pre-licensing education for Life, where it is not the only line applied for, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines , at 20 hours.
Twenty hours per line of authority. Every pre-licensing course carries an exam of its own, separate from the state exam, and the provider has five business days to file the completion with the Department. Life appears in this list only because the exemption below is written for the applicant who wants life and nothing else: someone applying for life together with another line is not seeking that line only, so the twenty hours apply to both. Section 83-17-251(2) is a closed list of eight exemptions and three of them are ways in that this site now carries: anyone excused the written examination by sections 83-17-39(1) or 83-17-67, a bachelor's degree with major coursework in insurance, and a current designation from a per-line list of seven for life, four for accident and health and four for property and casualty. Read again on 2026-08-20 against the Department's own current pages, and it holds with one wrinkle worth knowing: the hours table inside "How To Get A Mississippi Insurance License" still lists Life at twenty hours, which House Bill 819 stopped requiring of a Life-only applicant on 1 July 2024, while the Department's producer licensing page announces the exemption at the top in bold. The pre-licensing page's own summary is the shorter and safer one and it agrees with this record: twenty hours per line of authority for Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty and Personal Lines, twenty for the adjuster, forty for the bail agent, and nothing for anybody else. Nothing on either list reaches the limited lines, the industrial fire or industrial life papers, the surplus lines producer, the general agents, the viatical licenses or the entity licenses.
Read at the Department on 2026-08-20 . Miss. Code Ann. § 83-17-251(2), as amended by 2024 Laws ch. 452 (House Bill 819)
Mississippi requires no pre-licensing course for Life, where it is the only line applied for, Variable life and variable annuity products, where it is the only line applied for.
House Bill 819 added paragraph (h), "An individual that is seeking licensure for the life line of authority only", to the applicants the pre-licensing requirement does not apply to. Paragraph (g) does the same for variable life and variable annuity products. The bill was approved by the Governor on 2024-04-30 as chapter 452 and took effect on 2024-07-01. The Department's own how-to-get-a-license guide still prints twenty hours for life, which is why this record cites the enrolled bill rather than the guide. The examination is untouched: the exemption is from the course, not from the test.
Read at billstatus.ls.state.ms.us on 2026-08-15 . Miss. Code Ann. § 83-17-251(2)(g) and (h), added by 2024 Laws ch. 452 (House Bill 819)
Mississippi requires pre-licensing education for Independent Adjuster, Workers Comp Adjuster, Public Adjuster , at 20 hours.
Twenty hours, or demonstrated experience instead. Adjusters are the only candidates Mississippi lets substitute experience for the course. The twenty is the Department's figure and not the law's: the statute asks for "experience or special education or training with reference to the handling of loss claims under insurance contracts of sufficient duration and extent to make him competent", and states no number. The public adjuster qualification list at § 83-17-511(1) was rewritten by House Bill 1174 in 2025 and runs to nine paragraphs, two of them examinations and one a fifty thousand dollar bond, and no hour count is among them. Neither does the Department's own public adjuster regulation, 19 Miss. Admin. Code Part 1 Chapter 36, whose rule headed Pre-Licensing is about the examination. So the twenty hours is the Commissioner's implementation of the education branch of a competence test, which is why the Department's own instruction sheets offer written proof of experience in its place and quote that statutory clause word for word when they do. Independent adjuster carries two lines of authority in Mississippi, Property and Casualty including Workers Compensation, and Workers Compensation only.
Read at the Department on 2026-08-13 . Miss. Code Ann. § 83-17-511(1)(d), as amended by 2025 House Bill 1174, and § 83-17-413(e) for insurance adjusters
Mississippi requires pre-licensing education for Professional Bail Agent, Soliciting Bail Agent, Bail Enforcement Agent , at 40 hours.
Double the producer requirement, which is the same pattern South Carolina and Nevada show: bail is the line states treat least like insurance. Unlike the adjuster figure, this one is in the statute, and it reaches all three bail licenses rather than the agent alone. Two people are outside it: anybody holding a bail license on 2014-07-01 who has kept it in compliance with the continuing education subsection, and anybody who has been properly licensed under the chapter within the ninety days before applying. A limited examination for the restricted lines applies to every original license issued after 2014-07-01. The forty hours were forty classroom hours when Senate Bill 2677 wrote them in 2014; the 2018 reenactment carries the same figure with the word classroom gone, so the delivery is open.
Read at the Department on 2026-08-13 . Miss. Code Ann. § 83-39-3(7)(a), reenacted by 2018 House Bill 1479
Mississippi requires pre-licensing education for Legal Agent , at 3 hours.
The smallest pre-licensing hour count on this site and the only one Mississippi does not mention on its own pre-licensing page. That page names twenty hours per line for five producer lines, twenty for the adjuster and forty for the bail agent, and stops. The Legal Agent instruction sheet adds a third figure: "Applicant must successfully complete three (3) hours pre-licensing training and education requirement with Legal Services to be qualified to act as an agent or representative of a sponsor of prepaid legal services plans."The hours are given by the prepaid legal services sponsor, which also signs the notarized company endorsement the application needs, so the teaching and the endorsement come from the same company and the Department approves neither. Nothing on the state's course register can satisfy it and no school sells it.

Fees
| Charge | Paid to | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance producer license A privilege tax rather than a licensing fee in Mississippi's own words, $100 resident and nonresident alike, with a $100 renewal and a 50 percent late fee on reinstatement within twelve months. One fee covers the license whatever lines of authority are on it. It is scoped to the producer lines and the two temporary licenses, and not to the general agents or the surplus lines producer, each of which the Department prices on a line of its own even though the applicant may hold a producer license underneath. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Professional bail agent Published on the Department's bail page in two kinds, Limited Surety and Personal Surety, each of which files its own annual financial statement by 1 June. The soliciting and enforcement agents pay $40. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Certificate of authority (appointment) Scoped to nothing: the appointing insurer pays it, not the applicant, and it is a filing and processing charge on the appointment rather than on the license. Senate Bill 2409 raises it to $50 with effect from 1 July 2026, which the Department announces at the top of both its producer and its bail pages. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $25.00 |
| Bail enforcement or soliciting agent license One fee and one application form for both licenses. Fingerprinting is another $50 and every bail applicant is fingerprinted, by appointment only since 16 March 2020. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $40.00 |
| Bail agent fingerprinting Charged to every bail applicant of any kind. The Department stopped taking walk-ins on 16 March 2020 and the appointment has to be booked by telephone. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $50.00 |
| Automobile club agent license A privilege tax of five dollars, with a five dollar renewal. The term runs 1 April to 31 March whatever month the license issues in. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $5.00 |
| Burial agent license Five dollars, renewal five dollars. The application cannot be filed electronically at all and the term runs 1 March to the last day of February. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $5.00 |
| Legal agent license Ten dollars, renewal ten dollars, on the license that also carries Mississippi's three hours of sponsor-taught pre-licensing training. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $10.00 |
| Individual adjuster license The Department's fee schedule prices every individual adjuster license at $100 and lists six of them under the heading: independent adjuster, emergency, trainee, public adjuster, emergency public adjuster and public adjuster trainee. The separate instruction sheets for the emergency and trainee ones say $50 and are dated 01/08; the schedule is the later document and is what is recorded here. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Independent adjuster entity license Scoped to nothing: a business entity adjuster license is a second license paid by a second licensee rather than a charge on the individual. It is the joint largest individual-versus-entity gap on this schedule, four times the individual figure, matched only by the public adjuster entity. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $400.00 |
| Public adjuster entity license Scoped to nothing, for the same reason as the independent adjuster entity. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $400.00 |
| Insurance producer entity license Scoped to nothing: an alternative licensee rather than a second charge on the individual applicant. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $200.00 |
| Managing general agent license The same $100 for the individual and for the entity, which three of Mississippi's nine paired fees do. Not renewable online: the paper invoice goes back with the fee. Charged instead of the producer license fee rather than on top of it: the Department prices the managing general agent on a line of its own. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Supervising general agent license The same $100 for the individual and for the entity. A fifty percent late charge applies on reinstatement within twelve months. Charged instead of the producer license fee rather than on top of it. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Reinsurance intermediary manager or broker license $50 for the individual and $100 for the entity, on one application form that covers the manager and the broker together. Not renewable online, and a lapse carries no penalty fee, only a gap. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $50.00 |
| Risk retention agent license The license year runs 1 June to 31 May, which no other Mississippi license does. Not renewable online. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $50.00 |
| Surplus lines insurance producer license Charged for the surplus lines license itself. A resident applicant must also already hold the Mississippi producer license with both the Property and the Casualty lines, which is another $100 on its own page, so the real cost to a Mississippi resident of reaching this license is $200 and the second half of it is on /cost/mississippi/property/. A nonresident holding the equivalent at home pays this and nothing underneath it. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Viatical settlement representative or broker license The same $50 for an individual and for a business entity. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $50.00 |
| Viatical settlement provider license Renewal $200. A provider that misses the expiry files a new application rather than a reinstatement. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $200.00 |
| Third party administrator license A business entity license only; Mississippi publishes no individual version of it. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $200.00 |
| Portable electronics insurance producer license Fifty times the ordinary producer license and the joint largest figure on this schedule, level with the transportation network company. A business entity license only. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $5,000.00 |
| Transportation network company license Level with the portable electronics vendor at the top of the Mississippi schedule. The Department licenses the platform rather than the driver. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $5,000.00 |
| Duplicate license Scoped to nothing: a document an existing licensee asks for, not a step toward a first license. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $25.00 |
| Letter of certification Scoped to nothing. A letter of clearance is another $20. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $20.00 |
| License amendment, individual Scoped to nothing. The entity amendment is $50. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $25.00 |
| Limited lines producer license The Department prices the Limited Lines Insurance Producer and the Limited Line Credit Insurance Producer at $100 each on its schedule, with renewals at $100 and reinstatements at $150. The self-storage and travel licenses have their own applications and no separate line on the schedule; the travel line appears inside the Limited Lines Insurance Producer group there, which is the Department reading its own licenses two ways. All four are recorded at the $100 the schedule prints. | Mississippi Insurance Department | $100.00 |
| Peer-to-peer car sharing program and private review agent fee Searched and not published. The Department's own pages for the peer-to-peer car sharing program and the private utilization review agent set out what each must file and name no amount at either. Mississippi's twenty-six other fee rows are read off the Department one at a time rather than off a consolidated schedule, so there is no single document to fall back to. The amounts are left unread rather than guessed. | Mississippi Insurance Department | Not confirmed |
Every amount above was read at its own source between 2026-08-20 and 2026-09-05. Exam and fingerprint charges go to a vendor, not to the Department, and say so.
Approved courses
Mississippi approves both the provider and the course, and providers file completions and renewals through Sircon rather than with the Department directly. You can search it at sircon.com .
