Route 1 Take the 20-hour course

20 hours of pre-licensing education for the Life line, approved by the Department
Every Mississippi pre-licensing course carries an examination of its own, separate from the state examination, and the provider has five business days to report the result. This is the route for an applicant asking for life alongside another line, who is not seeking the life line only and so does not have the statutory exemption the other route sets out.

Miss. Code Ann. 83-17-251(2)(b): a bachelor's degree with major coursework in insurance from an accredited institution of higher learning. It exempts the course and not the examination.

LUTCF Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow, from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors
Miss. Code Ann. 83-17-251(2)(c), and the designation has to be current and valid. It exempts the course and not the examination.

Route 4 Apply for life and no other line
State exam required
Miss. Code Ann. § 83-17-251(2)(h), added by House Bill 819 and in force since 2024-07-01, says the pre-licensing requirement does not apply to "an individual that is seeking licensure for the life line of authority only". That is the whole course requirement gone, for this line and this applicant, and the examination stays. Ask for any second line at the same time and the course route is the one you are on.

An exemption from the written examination under Miss. Code Ann. sections 83-17-39(1) or 83-17-67
Miss. Code Ann. 83-17-251(2)(a) hangs the education exemption on the examination one: anybody excused the written examination by those two sections is excused the twenty hours with it. The two sections are not transcribed here, so this route says what 83-17-251 says about them and no more.
