The Mississippi Bail Soliciting Agent license

Bail Soliciting Agent

Solicits bail bonds in Mississippi for a professional bail agent. It is also the only door to the professional license: nobody may be issued one without three consecutive years holding this, so the forty hours and the paper here are the start of a four-year route rather than the whole of one.

Course

40 hrs

The shortest single course route.

Ways in

1 of them skips the state exam.

Exam

$50

Required on some routes and not others.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 40-hour course and pass the bail agent examination

    State exam required

    • 40 hours of bail, approved by the Department

The Department's pre-licensing table sets "Bail Agent – 40 hours classroom or self-study", double what a producer line takes and the largest figure Mississippi asks of anybody. The paper is the Bail Agent examination at Pearson VUE, two hours and 60 questions on the Department's own table, and the Department publishes a bail bond exam outline and content outline beside it. A soliciting agent works under a professional bail agent rather than writing bonds on their own account. The fee is $40.00, against $100.00 for the professional bail agent. Licenses renew in September of odd years and invoices go out in the last week of July. Every bail applicant is fingerprinted, at $50.00, by appointment only since 16 March 2020. And the license leads somewhere: Miss. Code Ann. 83-39 and the Department's professional bail agent instructions require three consecutive years as a soliciting agent immediately before a professional bail agent application, unless the applicant held the professional license before 1 July 2011.

  2. Route 2 Reinstate a lapsed license

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a Mississippi bail enforcement or soliciting agent license that has lapsed

"For those with inactive licenses, if you wish to reinstate, you may submit a first-time Professional Bail Agent, Bail Enforcement or Soliciting Agent paper application."The Department takes the reinstatement on the first-time form and on paper; there is no online route for it.

A course is required and nobody sells one

Mississippi's register holds four approved bail courses at forty credits each and not one of them is from a national seller: Mississippi Bail Training Institute, the Mississippi Coalition of Bail Sureties, and two from the MS Bail Agents Association, one classroom and one self-study. Three of the four are classroom only. No national seller prices a Mississippi bail product, so the forty hours are sold only in this state, and only by Mississippi organizations.
