Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.
-
Route 1 Take the 20-hour course
State exam required
Pre-licensing education
-
20 hours of pre-licensing education for the Public Adjuster line, approved by the Department
and financial responsibility
-
A bond or a letter of credit issued by a qualified financial institution, in force for at least $50,000, covering loss or claims practice by the public adjuster or by any holder of an emergency license the adjuster has certified. It has to stay active to keep and to renew the license.
Twenty hours on the Department's own pre-licensing table, or demonstrated experience instead, which Mississippi allows for adjusters and for nobody else. The paper is the Public Adjuster examination at Pearson VUE, two hours and 50 questions, and the Department publishes a content outline for it. The 2025 instruction sheet adds two things the older one did not: the $50,000 bond or letter of credit, which reaches the emergency public adjusters this licensee certifies as well as the licensee, and a conflict rule with no equivalent anywhere else on this site, "No public adjuster, may represent a person or entity for which the public adjuster previously adjusted a claim as an independent adjuster, either directly or indirectly."Privilege tax $100 resident and nonresident from 1 July 2016, with a $50 late fee if the renewal paperwork misses the expiry date.

Route 2 Demonstrate experience instead of the course
State exam required
Experience or training
-
Experience or special education or training of sufficient duration and extent to make the applicant competent, which the statute does not put a period on
and financial responsibility
-
A bond or a letter of credit issued by a qualified financial institution, in force for at least $50,000, covering loss or claims practice by the public adjuster or by any holder of an emergency license the adjuster has certified. It has to stay active to keep and to renew the license.
The Department's own instruction sheet says adjuster candidates "shall complete twenty (20) hours of pre-licensing or demonstrate experience", and the statute behind it is Miss. Code Ann. 83-17-511(1)(d), which asks for experience or special education or training "of sufficient duration and extent to make him competent" and names no number. The twenty hours are the Commissioner's implementation of a competence test rather than a figure the law sets, which is why this route exists and why no minimum is shown on it.

A course is required and nobody sells one
Mississippi's Adjuster category holds nine approved courses. Eight of the nine are for the combined Property and Casualty with Workers Compensation paper or for adjusting generally, and the ninth, the Mississippi Association of Self Insurers' MASI CSIWCP Work Comp Adjuster course at twenty classroom credits, is for workers compensation. None is named for the public adjuster paper from a national seller: of the two national providers holding an approved Mississippi adjuster course, WebCE's and Kaplan's are both the combined paper.
