Limited Lines Insurance Producer

One Mississippi license carrying eight lines of authority: Industrial Fire, Industrial Life Accident and Health, Surety, Title, Trip Accident and Baggage, Car Rental, Crop Insurance and Travel. Two of the eight are examined and six are not, and the two are examined by different bodies, one of them a funeral insurance company rather than a testing vendor.

Required on some routes and not others.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by applying for it with no examination anywhere, sitting the examination, a license already held or moving here already licensed.

  1. Route 1 Apply for one of the six unexamined lines

    Exempt from the state exam

Surety, Title, Trip Accident and Baggage, Car Rental, Crop Insurance and Travel take no examination and no pre-licensing course. The Department's instruction sheet is explicit about which two do: "Examinations are required for the industrial fire and industrial life lines of authority only."The Department's pre-licensing page confirms the other half, listing the hours it does require against five producer lines of authority, the adjuster and the bail agent, and against nothing else. The fee is a $100 privilege tax, resident and nonresident alike, with a $100 renewal and a $150 reinstatement.

  2. Route 2 Pass the Industrial Fire examination

    State exam required

The Industrial Fire paper is one of the thirteen Pearson VUE gives for Mississippi: two hours, 50 questions, per the Department's own examination table. Resident scores reach the Department electronically. No pre-licensing course: the Department's hours table names Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Independent Adjuster, Workers Comp Adjuster, Public Adjuster and Bail Agent, and Industrial Fire is on neither that table nor the producer list it belongs to.

  3. Route 3 Pass the Industrial Life examination at the Home Service Life Council

    State exam required

The one Mississippi insurance examination Pearson VUE does not give. The Department says so twice: "All examinations, except for Industrial Life, are administered by: Pearson Vue", and the instruction sheet sends the applicant to "Allied Funeral Associates Insurance Company by phone at (662) 840-9911", which its pre-licensing page calls the Home Service Life Council. There is no website and no online booking, and the applicant rather than the vendor has to send the result in: "examination results for Industrial Life exams must be submitted to the Department by the applicant", where every other paper's score is filed electronically. Effective 1 July 2015 the policy limits on this line are an aggregate $10,000 in death benefits, $60 a week disability, $5,000 a policy year for dismemberment, broken limbs or eyesight, and $3,500 a policy year for drugs, hospital and medical.

  4. Route 4 Be a Mississippi bar-licensed attorney taking the Title line

    Exempt from the state exam

    Bar admission

    • admission to the Mississippi bar, listed in the Mississippi Bar directory

    and appointment

    • An appointment with a title company. An attorney who is not listed in the Mississippi Bar directory at msbar.org must file the Limited Lines Insurance Producer application for Title with the fee and then be appointed.

"Mississippi bar-licensed attorneys are exempt from completing a license application (MCA 83-15-3). They are required to be appointed with a Title company."This is wider than any of the attorney carve-outs this site has recorded for reinsurance intermediaries or public adjusting, which excuse an attorney acting professionally from needing a license: this one excuses the application itself and leaves the appointment standing, so the attorney writes title insurance without ever filing with the Department.

  5. Route 5 Move to Mississippi and apply within 90 days

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days Licensed as a limited lines insurance producer in another state, with a Letter of Clearance from that state unless the national producer database can verify the status, filed within 90 days of clearing the previous resident license.

New residents transferring a license from another state file a Letter of Clearance from the previous resident state, unless the status can be verified on the national producer database, and the application must reach the Department within 90 days of clearing the old license. A nonresident's home state status is verified through the NAIC producer database.

Mississippi requires no pre-licensing course for any of these eight lines, and its register carries none for them. No national seller prices a Mississippi product for industrial fire, industrial life, surety, title, trip accident and baggage, car rental, crop or travel. The industrial life paper is given by a funeral insurance company over the telephone, which is not a market a national school sells into.
