Getting an insurance license in Nevada
Nevada licenses through the Nevada Division of Insurance, which calls the licensee a producer. Which license you need depends on what you intend to sell, and the requirements differ sharply between them.
License types
-
Accident and Health
Sells accident and health insurance in Nevada, which the statute defines as coverage for sickness, bodily injury or accidental death, and which may include disability income benefits.
No course
-
Administrator
Nevada's third party administrator, holding a certificate of registration rather than a license. Nothing in the application is a course or an examination: it is a reviewed financial statement, the documents that created the business, and a notarized affidavit from everybody who controls it.
No course
-
Bail Agent
Writes bail bonds in Nevada under appointment by a surety insurer. Six hours of instruction, an examination as broad as the bail bond business, a bond of its own, and a year of Nevada residence before applying. The six hours are dated in this section and nowhere else: they are required of anyone qualifying on or after 1999-07-01. A nonresident bail agent is outside both the course and the examination, because NRS 697.150(2) sends a nonresident to three paragraphs only, and NRS 697.200(1) excludes the nonresident license by name.
6 hrs
-
Bail Enforcement Agent
Recovers defendants who have not appeared, on behalf of a Nevada bail agent or surety. Eighty hours of training, which ties North Dakota's title producer and is beaten only by Florida's 2-20 at 200 and three New York lines at 90, and the only one whose syllabus is first aid, defensive tactics and the use of force rather than insurance. It is also the only license here that asks for a psychological evaluation and a drug test.
80 hrs
-
Bail General Agent
Appoints and supervises bail agents in Nevada on behalf of an insurer. It is the one bail license Nevada asks a course of and no examination: the examination section names the other three and not this one. The application also carries a written appointment by an authorized insurer, a copy of the contract authorizing the applicant to act for it, and a letter from a local law enforcement agency in the applicant's county of residence about the applicant's record.
6 hrs
-
Bail Solicitor
Solicits bail bonds in Nevada as the employee of a licensed bail agent. Same six hours as the agent, same examination, and three months of Nevada residence rather than a year. The license cannot be held on its own: the holder has to be the bona fide employee of a licensed bail agent, or be about to become one.
6 hrs
-
Casualty
Sells casualty insurance in Nevada, which the statute defines as coverage against legal liability. For a producer, and unusually, this line also carries surety: bonds for fidelity, for performance of contracts and for financial guaranty, and surety indemnifying financial institutions.
No course
-
Company Adjuster
An optional Nevada license for an insurer's own employee adjusting claims from an office in the state. Optional until 2023, when the legislature made it the only way to administer Nevada workers' compensation claims from outside Nevada.
No course
-
Escrow Officer
Handles escrows, settlements and closings under a supervising title agent. Nevada gives it two ways in and lets the applicant choose: a year of recent escrow experience, or the Commissioner's written examination. There is no course either way.
No course
-
Exchange Enrollment Facilitator
Helps Nevadans enroll in coverage through the state's health insurance exchange. Nevada certifies it rather than licensing it, and it is the only credential in the state whose twenty hours are asked of the applicant rather than of the course provider.
20 hrs
1 course from $169.95
-
Independent Adjuster
Adjusts Nevada property, casualty, surety or workers' compensation claims as an independent contractor rather than an employee. The tax treatment is part of the definition, which is unusual: Nevada decides which adjuster license you need by how the insurer pays you.
No course
-
Insurance Consultant
Sells advice about insurance for a fee and nothing else. NRS 683C.070 forbids the holder to hold a producer or surplus lines broker license in any line at the same time, and NRS 683C.080 forbids employment by, partnership with or any payment from a producer, a broker or an insurer, so the license is defined as much by what its holder may not be as by what they may do.
No course
-
Insurance Vending Machine
One license per machine, issued to a producer already licensed, for selling personal travel accident policies from a machine at an airport or similar place. It is an addition to a producer license rather than a way into the business, and it dies with the producer license it hangs from.
No course
-
Life
Sells life insurance in Nevada. The statute writes the line as insurance on human lives, including endowment and annuity benefits, and says it may carry accidental death, dismemberment and disability income benefits.
No course
-
Managing General Agent
Acts for an insurer in Nevada with authority over underwriting or claims that an ordinary producer does not have. Nevada asks no pre-licensing course for it and licenses the natural person and the firm separately.
No course
-
Club Agent
Sells or solicits motor club service for a club other than the club itself. Nevada's qualifications are three lines long and none of them is a course, an examination or an hour count: be 21, be a resident or come from a state that lets Nevadans in, and be trustworthy.
No course
-
Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser
Appraises damage to Nevada motor vehicles insured under a physical damage policy, or for a third party claimant. Its qualification is a bond and a real address rather than an examination.
No course
-
Personal Lines
Sells personal lines in Nevada, which the statute defines line by line rather than by who buys it: automobile and motorcycle insurance, residential property including flood, personal watercraft, and excess liability written over an underlying automobile or residential policy.
No course
-
Agent for Prepaid Burial Contracts
Solicits the sale of prepaid burial contracts on behalf of a seller who holds a certificate of authority. Nevada's qualifications are a reputation and a clean record rather than a course: there is no pre-licensing education and no examination.
No course
-
Seller of Prepaid Burial Contracts
Holds the certificate of authority the agents sell under, and the application is a trust arrangement rather than a qualification. Nevada asks for the proposed trustee, the performers, and the trust agreement itself, and asks for no course and no examination.
No course
-
Agent for Prepaid Funeral Contracts
Solicits the sale of prepaid funeral contracts on behalf of a seller who holds a certificate of authority. Nevada's qualifications are a reputation and a clean record rather than a course: there is no pre-licensing education and no examination.
No course
-
Seller of Prepaid Funeral Contracts
Holds the certificate of authority the agents sell under, and the application is a trust arrangement rather than a qualification. Nevada asks for the proposed trustee, the performers, and the trust agreement itself, and asks for no course and no examination.
No course
-
Property
Sells property insurance in Nevada, which the statute defines as coverage for direct or consequential loss or damage to property of every kind.
No course
-
Public Adjuster
Represents the financial interests of the named insured on Nevada claims, and is barred from workers' compensation entirely. The exclusion is in the definition rather than in a separate rule.
No course
-
Reinsurance Intermediary
Covers both the broker who places reinsurance for a ceding insurer and the manager who binds or manages a reinsurer's assumed business. Nevada builds it on a producer license rather than on a course, and puts a bond and errors and omissions cover on the manager only.
No course
-
Staff Adjuster
Adjusts Nevada workers' compensation claims as the employee of a registered third party administrator. It is defined by the employer rather than by the work, and is the only Nevada adjuster license that is.
No course
-
Surplus Lines Broker
Places business with insurers Nevada has not authorized, for risks whose home state is Nevada. It is built on a general lines producer license held for six months rather than on a course, and the only study in it is an examination the Commissioner may prescribe on surplus lines.
No course
-
Temporary Emergency Adjuster
Adjusts Nevada losses from a catastrophe the Governor has declared. No examination, and it has to be obtained before deployment or within five days of it.
No course
-
Title Agent
Writes title insurance for an authorized title insurer, and may handle escrows, settlements and closings alongside it. Nevada licenses it by regulation rather than by statute, and the qualification is an appointment plus described experience rather than a course or an examination.
No course
-
Variable Annuities and Variable Life Insurance
Sells variable annuities and variable life insurance in Nevada, which the statute describes as coverage reflecting the results of a separate investment account. Nevada issues it as a line of authority in its own right rather than as an endorsement on the life line.
No course
-
Viatical Settlement Broker
Negotiates the sale of a life policy on behalf of the person insured under it. Nevada licenses it the same way it licenses the provider, minus the plan of operation, and asks no course and no examination for either.
No course
-
Viatical Settlement Provider
Buys life policies from the people insured under them. Nevada asks for a detailed plan of operation, a fraud prevention plan and at least $250,000 of financial responsibility, and it asks for no course and no examination.
No course
Is a course required?
Nevada requires no pre-licensing course for Every individual license type other than the five below.
The Division answers this directly for applicants: a pre-licensing course is required only for the five license types listed separately here, and for every other individual license type it is not required, though courses remain available. A sourced zero. Nevada publishes detailed rules about how long an approved course must be, and those are rules for course providers rather than a requirement on the applicant.

Nevada requires pre-licensing education for Bail Agent, Bail General Agent, Bail Solicitor , at 6 hours.
Six hours, and the course has to come from a state or national organization of bail agents or another body that trains for the license type, then be approved by the Commissioner. The statute says it three times rather than once, in the qualification section for each of the three licenses, and the wording is the same in all three. For the bail agent it is dated: the six hours are required of anyone qualifying on or after 1999-07-01, which is when the Legislature added them. NAC 683A.225 sends the provider of a bail course to the same approval rules a producer course provider follows.
Read at the Department on 2026-08-13 . NRS 697.150(1)(g), 697.170(1)(d) and 697.184(1)(a)
Nevada requires pre-licensing education for Bail Enforcement Agent , at 80 hours.
Eighty hours covering law, field operations, investigation, courtroom demeanor, first aid and CPR. Nothing about it resembles the rest of insurance licensing, and it is four times what Nevada asks of anyone selling insurance. Two things soften it and both are in the same section. Training required of a peace officer by a municipal, state or federal law enforcement agency or a branch of the Armed Forces is accepted in place of the whole eighty. And the eighty do not come first: an applicant has nine months from being employed by a bail agent to finish them, and the Commissioner issues a temporary license in the meantime to anyone otherwise qualified. The statute even provides for taking them sixteen hours a weekend for five weeks.

Nevada requires pre-licensing education for Exchange Enrollment Facilitator , at 20 hours.
The only Nevada license whose twenty hours a reader can act on, and the one place the Division's course lengths are written as a requirement on the applicant rather than a standard for the provider. NRS 695J.110(4) asks for a course of instruction and fixes no number, the way New Jersey and Oregon and West Virginia do. NAC 695J.100 then puts the duty on the applicant, who must attest to having completed an approved precertification course within the year before applying and must do so before sitting the examination, and NAC 695J.140(1) sets the course at five hours on title 57 of NRS and its regulations, at least half of that on law common to every line, plus fifteen hours of health insurance content. Twenty in total. Nevada's producer figures look identical and are not the same thing: nothing requires a producer to take a course at all, so 20, 35, 75 and 95 there are rules a course must meet to be approved.
Read at the Department on 2026-08-13 . NRS 695J.110(4), which delegates the length, and NAC 695J.100 and 695J.140(1), which set it
Fees
| Charge | Paid to | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint card submission Only where prints are sent on a hard card rather than taken by live scan, and payable by card. It is an alternative to live scan rather than a charge everybody meets, so it is scoped to nothing and no cost page totals it. | Nevada Department of Public Safety | $39.00 |
| Producer of insurance application and license NRS 680B.010(5)(a). The Commissioner collects it in advance, and the triennial renewal at 680B.010(5)(c) is the same $125. An insurer appointing the producer pays a further $15 per appointment under (5)(b), which is the insurer's charge rather than the applicant's. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Producer regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(d), charged "in addition to any other fee or charge" and paid at the time of the initial application or issuance. It funds the Fund for Insurance Administration and Enforcement under 680C.100 and is not refundable. The triennial fee is the same $60, so a Nevada producer license costs $185 to obtain rather than $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Adjuster application and license NRS 680B.010(8)(a), which prices the adjuster licenses of chapter 684A. NRS 684A.030 defines the independent, public, company and staff adjuster together and 684A.050(2) makes the company adjuster and the staff adjuster pay what the independent adjuster pays, so one figure covers all four. Triennial renewal is the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Adjuster regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(l) and (m) name the independent adjuster and the public adjuster, and NRS 684A.050(2) carries the company adjuster and the staff adjuster onto the same footing by naming 680C.110 alongside 680B.010. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Motor vehicle physical damage appraiser application and license NRS 680B.010(9)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Motor vehicle physical damage appraiser regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(n), charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Insurance consultant application and license NRS 680B.010(32)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Insurance consultant regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(k), charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Bail agent application and license NRS 680B.010(20)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. A surety insurer appointing the agent pays $15 for each appointment under (20)(b). The bail lines carry no 680C.110 fee: that section's list runs to escrow officers and title agents and names no bail licensee. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Bail enforcement agent application and license NRS 680B.010(21)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| General agent for bail application and license NRS 680B.010(22)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125 and a $15 initial appointment by each insurer under (22)(b). | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Bail solicitor application and license NRS 680B.010(23)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Exchange enrollment facilitator application and certificate NRS 680B.010(35)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125 and a temporary certificate at $10 under (35)(c). | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Surplus lines broker application and license NRS 680B.010(6)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Surplus lines broker regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(o), which names the broker as NRS 685A.031 defines one. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Managing general agent application and license NRS 680B.010(7)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125 and a $15 appointment fee for each insurer under (7)(b). A firm licensed under NRS 683A.140 pays this again for every natural person it designates, because each of them is separately licensed in their own name. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Managing general agent regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(i), which names the managing general agent as NRS 683A.060 defines one. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Administrator application and certificate of registration NRS 680B.010(14)(a), which prices the certificate of registration for an administrator licensed under chapter 683A. Triennial renewal is the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Administrator regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(h), which names the administrator as NRS 683A.025 defines one. Charged in addition to the certificate fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Escrow officer application and license NRS 680B.010(24)(a), which prices the title agent and the escrow officer together. NRS 692A.103(1)(e) sends the applicant to this section by name. Triennial renewal is the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Escrow officer regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(y), which NRS 692A.103(1)(e) also names in terms, as a fee owed "in addition to any other fee or charge". Not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Insurance vending machine application and license, each machine NRS 680B.010(10)(a), charged for each machine rather than for the producer. Triennial renewal is the same $125 per machine under (10)(b). NRS 683A.370(2) is the license it pays for, and it hangs from the producer's own license rather than standing alone, so it is charged on top of the producer fees rather than instead of them. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Reinsurance intermediary application and license NRS 680B.010(27)(a), which prices the broker and the manager together, with the triennial renewal at the same $125. NRS 681A.410 sends the applicant to this section by name. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Reinsurance intermediary regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(f), which names the intermediary as NRS 681A.330 defines one. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Viatical settlement provider application and license NRS 680B.010(31)(a)(1), renewing annually at the same $1,000 under (31)(a)(2). It is the most expensive individual license in the Nevada schedule and it is charged to the buyer of policies rather than to a seller of insurance. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $1,000.00 |
| Viatical settlement provider regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(s). Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable, and payable annually rather than triennially. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Viatical settlement broker application and license NRS 680B.010(31)(b)(1), renewing annually at the same $500. A producer of insurance who acts as a viatical settlement broker registers instead, at $250 under (31)(c), which is the cheaper of the two doors into the same work. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $500.00 |
| Viatical settlement broker regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(r). Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable, and payable annually rather than triennially. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Motor club agent application and license NRS 680B.010(38)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $78 and a $5 appointment by each motor club under (38)(b). It is the cheapest license in the Nevada schedule, against the $125 almost everything else costs, and it carries no 680C.110 fee because that section names no club agent. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $78.00 |
| Seller of prepaid funeral contracts certificate of authority NRS 680B.010(25), which prices the certificate and its renewal together at one figure rather than splitting them. Chapter 689 makes the fee non-refundable in terms. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Seller of prepaid funeral contracts regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(w). Charged in addition to the certificate fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Agent for prepaid funeral contracts application and license NRS 680B.010(26)(a), with the triennial renewal at the same $125. Chapter 689 makes it non-refundable in terms. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Agent for prepaid funeral contracts regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(u). Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Prepaid burial contract agent or seller application and license NRS 680B.010(28)(a), which prices the agent and the seller together in one line, with the triennial renewal at the same $125. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Prepaid burial contract agent regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(t), which names the agent for prepaid burial contracts under chapter 689. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Prepaid burial contract seller regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(v), which names the seller of prepaid burial contracts under chapter 689 separately from the agent. Charged in addition to the certificate fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Title agent application and license NRS 680B.010(24)(a), which prices the title agent and the escrow officer together, with the triennial renewal at the same $125 and a $15 appointment fee for each title insurer under (24)(c). | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $125.00 |
| Title agent regulation and enforcement fee NRS 680C.110(4)(z), which names the title agent as NRS 692A.060 defines one. Charged in addition to the license fee and not refundable. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $60.00 |
| Temporary emergency adjuster license NRS 680B.010 is Nevada's fee schedule and it enumerates forty-one classes of licensee across producers, adjusters, bail, title, viatical, motor club and the rest. No line in it reaches the temporary emergency adjuster, and NRS 684A.060(3) and (4) put the paperwork on the insurer rather than on the individual: the insurer applies, or notifies the Commissioner within five days of deploying somebody. The zero here is a schedule read end to end and found silent, not a figure nobody looked for. | Nevada Commissioner of Insurance | $0.00 |
Every amount above was read at its own source on 2026-09-05. Exam and fingerprint charges go to a vendor, not to the Department, and say so.
Approved courses
Nevada approves the provider and the course even though most applicants need neither. Its rules run further than a course approval usually does: a provider must hold a license from the Commission on Postsecondary Education, keep a physical office in Nevada and employ a full-time director who lives there, and no course may teach more than eight hours in a day. The register was read through Sircon's Approved Courses Inquiry on 2026-08-17 and captured in full at src/data/generated/nv-approvals.json: 22 providers and 166 courses. Almost all of it is producer prelicensing at twenty and forty hours that no Nevada producer is required to take. Two parts of it are requirements somebody actually has to meet: A.D. Banker's twenty-hour Exchange Enrollment Facilitator precertification training, and three six-hour bail agent courses, two from UNLV and one from Northwest Career College. No course anywhere in the register answers the eighty hours a bail enforcement agent owes. You can search it at sircon.com .
