The Nevada Casualty license

Casualty

Sells casualty insurance in Nevada, which the statute defines as coverage against legal liability. For a producer, and unusually, this line also carries surety: bonds for fidelity, for performance of contracts and for financial guaranty, and surety indemnifying financial institutions.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a license held in another state or moving here already licensed.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

    A sourced zero read off a closed list. NRS 683A.251(1) tells the Commissioner what to find before approving a resident producer application, and the list is four items: eighteen years of age, no act that is a ground for refusal, the fees paid, and the examinations passed. No education appears in it, and none appears in NRS 683A.241, which is the examination section. Nevada does approve prelicensing providers and courses, and NAC 683A.221 sets how long each one must run, but those are standards a course must meet to be approved rather than anything an applicant must hold.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a producer license carrying the Casualty line of authority in another state

    NRS 683A.291(1). Either that license is current, or the application reaches Nevada within ninety days of its cancellation and the other state certifies that the applicant was in good standing then. The NAIC's own records showing the applicant licensed and in good standing for the lines requested are an accepted alternative to the certificate. The section is headed as an exemption from education and examination, and Nevada asks no education of a producer in the first place, so what it actually removes here is the examination.

  3. Route 3 Move to Nevada and apply within 90 days

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days Licensed in another state for the Casualty line of authority, moving to Nevada, and applying for the resident license within ninety days of establishing legal residence.

    NRS 683A.291(3). It is not a separate exemption but the deadline attached to the one above: miss the ninety days and the mover sits the examination like anybody else.
