The Nevada Bail Enforcement Agent license

Bail Enforcement Agent

Recovers defendants who have not appeared, on behalf of a Nevada bail agent or surety. Eighty hours of training, which ties North Dakota's title producer and is beaten only by Florida's 2-20 at 200 and three New York lines at 90, and the only one whose syllabus is first aid, defensive tactics and the use of force rather than insurance. It is also the only license here that asks for a psychological evaluation and a drug test.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 80-hour basic course of training

    State exam required

    • 80 hours of constitutional law, arrest and surrender procedure, civil liability, the rights of persons in custody, the use of force, the history and principles of bail, field operations, methods of arrest, nonlethal weapons, defensive tactics, investigation, ethics, courtroom demeanor, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, approved by the Department

NRS 697.177(1) and (2). The eighty hours are not a gate at the front door: subsection 4 gives an applicant nine months from the date a bail agent employs them to finish, and the Commissioner issues a temporary license in the meantime to anyone otherwise qualified. The statute also allows for taking them sixteen hours a weekend across five weeks. Beside the training, NRS 697.173 asks for twenty-one years of age, a high school diploma or its equivalent, a psychiatrist's or psychologist's assessment that the applicant has no condition that would affect the work, and a controlled substance test taken within thirty days of applying.

  2. Route 2 Substitute law enforcement or armed forces peace officer training

    State exam required

    • A pre-licensing course in training required by a municipal, state or federal law enforcement agency, or by a branch of the Armed Forces, to carry out the duties of a peace officer

NRS 697.177(3). It replaces the whole eighty hours rather than counting against them, and the statute sets no length at all for what it accepts: the test is that the training was required to carry out the duties of a peace officer, not that it ran for any number of hours. Proof of completion goes to the Commissioner. The hour count here is null because the law states none, which is different from a figure this site has not read yet.

  3. Route 3 Relicense within 6 months of a lapse

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a Nevada bail enforcement agent license that has lapsed

NRS 697.205. Six months from the date of lapse, and it removes the examination only.

A course is required and nobody sells one

No national seller sells a course for this license. Nevada's register holds nothing in its Bail Enforcement category at all, so the eighty hours NRS 697.177(2) asks of a bail enforcement agent have no approved course behind them anywhere. The three approved bail courses in the register are all six credits and answer the bail agent requirement, not this one.
