Getting an insurance license in Indiana

Indiana licenses through the Indiana Department of Insurance, which calls the licensee a producer. Which license you need depends on what you intend to sell, and the requirements differ sharply between them.

License types

Is a course required?

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Life, Health, Personal Lines Property and Casualty , at 20 hours.

The certificate of completion is valid for six months, and both the exam and the license application have to happen inside that window. The statute sets the figure per producer type rather than per line, and its list is the site's: twenty hours for life, twenty for health, forty for life and health, forty for property and casualty, twenty for personal lines and ten for title.

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Life & Health, Personal & Commercial Property and Casualty , at 40 hours.

The combined figure is the two single-line courses added together. The statute sets the figure per producer type rather than per line, and its list is the site's: twenty hours for life, twenty for health, forty for life and health, forty for property and casualty, twenty for personal lines and ten for title.

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Title , at 10 hours.

Ten hours, and no examination. Title is one of the licenses Indiana issues without one, so the course is the whole of the requirement rather than the gate in front of an exam. The statute sets the figure per producer type rather than per line, and its list is the site's: twenty hours for life, twenty for health, forty for life and health, forty for property and casualty, twenty for personal lines and ten for title.

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Independent Adjuster , at 40 hours.

The statute asks for "a prelicensing course of study for the line of authority in which the individual has applied" and puts no number on it. The Department does: "For resident Independent Adjusters, forty (40) hours of pre-licensing education are required."Sircon's Indiana register carries six approved courses under the Adjuster category and every one of them is filed at forty credits, which is the register agreeing with the page. Two of the six belong to national sellers. IC 27-1-28-15(e) is the one way past it and it removes the examination as well: a current claims certification from a national or state claims association whose program the Department has approved, which the Department names as the Uniform Claims Certification held with the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance.

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Bail Agent, Recovery Agent , at 12 hours.

Twelve hours of Bail/Recovery pre-licensing education, found through Sircon's approved courses inquiry under the Bail/Recovery course category. Five courses sit in that category and every one of them is classroom delivery from an Indiana bail business or bail school. No national seller is on it and no self-study course is approved, so this is a course requirement no online product can satisfy, whatever its hours say. Renewal asks for six hours of continuing education from the same register.

Indiana requires pre-licensing education for Indiana Navigator , at 8 hours.

IC 27-19-4-11(b) sets out what the course of study must cover in four subjects and names no number of hours. The Department's register does: four approved Navigator courses, all self-study, all at eight credits. IC 27-19-4-11(d)(1)(B) is why they belong to who they belong to, because it directs the commissioner to let a registered application organization write its own training program and curriculum for its own navigators, so every one of the four is an Indiana health non-profit or community organization rather than a school. The certification is not a producer license and IC 27-19-4-2 says so: "Neither a navigator nor an application organization is subject to the licensing requirements of IC 27-1-15.6."

Fees

Charge Paid to Amount
License application fee The same figure for every producer line, every limited line and the consultant, charged per license and not refundable. IC 27-1-15.6-32(b) makes it a two-year renewal fee as well, $40 for a resident and $90 for a nonresident. Indiana Department of Insurance $40.00
Independent adjuster license IC 27-1-28-12(a)(2) to apply and IC 27-1-28-14(c) to renew, on a two-year term. A license that has expired can be reissued within twelve months for $80. Indiana Department of Insurance $40.00
Public adjuster certificate of authority An annual fee under IC 27-1-27-4(c), which the commissioner may change by rule to whatever administering the chapter costs. The certificate expires on 31 December of the year it was issued, so an applicant licensed in November pays again six weeks later unless the application arrived on or after 1 October. Indiana Department of Insurance $50.00
Surplus lines producer license IC 27-1-15.6-32(d), every two years, for a resident. A nonresident pays $120. Either way it is double the producer license it has to sit on top of. Indiana Department of Insurance $80.00
Bail agent license application Against $40 for a producer license, which makes it the dearest individual license the Department issues. It renews at $300. Indiana Department of Insurance $650.00
Recovery agent license application It renews at $300 as well, so a recovery agent is the only licensee here who pays the same to start as to continue. Indiana Department of Insurance $300.00
Bail and recovery agent examination fee Paid online by card when the examination is booked. Bail agents and recovery agents sit the same paper and pay the same fee for it. Indiana Department of Insurance $50.00
Viatical settlement provider license Filed by post with a copy of the most current audited financial statement showing a net worth of not less than $150,000. The viatical settlement agent and broker pay nothing, because the Department declares them rather than licensing them. Indiana Department of Insurance $1,000.00
Nonresident license application fee What a nonresident or designated home state applicant pays instead of the $40 resident fee for a producer or limited lines license, under IC 27-1-15.6-32(b). It is an alternative to the resident fee rather than a charge on top, so no cost page totals both. Indiana Department of Insurance $90.00
Duplicate license A ceiling rather than a price: IC 27-1-15.6-32(e) says the fee for a duplicate producer, surplus lines producer, limited lines producer or consultant license may not exceed ten dollars. It replaces a lost license rather than buying one, so no route cost includes it. Indiana Department of Insurance $10.00
Reinsurance intermediary filing fee The Department prints the figure on the applications themselves rather than in a fee schedule: both the Reinsurance Intermediary Broker application and the Reinsurance Intermediary Manager application carry "Filing Fee in the amount of: Initial $100.00", and both renew at the same $100. IC 27-6-9-15 licenses the intermediary and leaves the amount to the commissioner, which is why the statute does not carry it. The manager also files a certified errors and omissions policy under 760 IAC 1-51, which is cover rather than a payment and is not totalled here. Indiana Department of Insurance $100.00
Pharmacy benefit manager license fee Searched and capped rather than set. IC 27-1-24.5 lets the commissioner charge a license application fee and renewal fees "in an amount not to exceed five hundred dollars", to be deposited in the department of insurance fund, and leaves the figure to the commissioner. The Department's own pharmacy benefit manager initial registration page carries the filing requirements and names no amount. The ceiling is certain and the price is not, so the amount is recorded as unread rather than guessed. Indiana Department of Insurance Not confirmed
Third party administrator and application organization fee Searched and not published. IC 27-1-25-11.1 makes a resident third party administrator's application carry "an application fee in an amount determined by the commissioner" and IC 27-1-25-12.2 says the same for a nonresident, so the statute will never carry the figure. The Department's third party administrator pages carry the filing requirements and no amount, and IC 27-1-3-15, which is Indiana's statutory fee section, prices insurer filings rather than entity licenses. The amounts are left unread rather than guessed. Indiana Department of Insurance Not confirmed
Navigator certification fee Searched and not published. IC 27-19 and 760 IAC 4-2-1 require certification as an Indiana Navigator and annual renewal, and neither names a figure. The Department's Indiana Navigators page carries the eight-credit course requirement and the renewal process without pricing either. It is the same drafting Maine, Ohio and Oklahoma use for their navigators, and in every one of them the fee is left to the regulator. The amount is left unread rather than guessed. Indiana Department of Insurance Not confirmed
Temporary producer license fee Searched and not separately priced. IC 27-1-15.6-32 is Indiana's producer fee section and it prices three things: a resident license renewal at $40 every two years, a nonresident at $90 and a designated home state license at $90, plus a duplicate license at not more than $10. It says nothing about the temporary producer license, and the Department's licensing pages do not price it either. Whether a temporary applicant pays the ordinary $40 or nothing at all is not established by either, so the amount is left unread rather than inferred. Indiana Department of Insurance Not confirmed

Every amount above was read at its own source between 2026-08-19 and 2026-09-05. Exam and fingerprint charges go to a vendor, not to the Department, and say so.

Approved courses

Indiana approves the pre-licensing provider and publishes the approved courses through Sircon rather than on the Department's own site. The certificate has to name the same examination the candidate registered for, and it is valid for six months, inside which the examination has to be passed and the application filed. Read on 2026-08-19 one course category at a time, the register holds 120 courses from 39 providers. Three of its categories matter to licenses nobody had built here: Adjuster holds six courses at forty credits each, two of them from national sellers; Bail/Recovery holds five at twelve credits, every one of them classroom delivery from an Indiana bail business; and Navigator PE holds four at eight credits, every one self-study from an Indiana health non-profit. Ticking every category at once caps the result at 100 rows and truncates alphabetically without saying so. You can search it at sircon.com .
