Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 40-hour course

    State exam required

    • 40 hours of pre-licensing education for the Personal & Commercial Property and Casualty line, approved by the Department

IC 27-1-15.7-5(a)(2)(D) carries the figure, and it is set per producer type rather than per line of authority. The course has to be one the commissioner has certified under IC 27-1-15.7-5, and IC 27-1-15.6-6(c) gives the certificate of completion six months: the examination and the license application both have to happen inside that window.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an insurance producer license carrying the Personal & Commercial Property and Casualty line of authority in another state

IC 27-1-15.6-9(a). It waives the pre-licensing education and the examination together. The other license has to be current, or else the application has to reach the commissioner within ninety days of its cancellation, with either a certification of good standing from that state or a good standing record for the same line in the producer license registry.

  3. Route 3 Move to Indiana and apply within 90 days

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days Licensed as an insurance producer in another state carrying the Personal & Commercial Property and Casualty line of authority there, and applying to become an Indiana resident licensee within ninety days of establishing legal residence in Indiana.

IC 27-1-15.6-9(b). The ninety days run from the day legal residence in Indiana is established, not from the day the other license ends, and the exemption covers only the lines the other state had already granted. It is written as an exemption the commissioner may narrow by rule.

  4. Route 4 Hold a qualifying designation

    State exam required

    • CPCU Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, from The Institutes

    • or

CIC Certified Insurance Counselor, from the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research

    • or

AAI Accredited Advisor in Insurance, from The Institutes

IC 27-1-15.6-9(d). The designation removes the pre-licensing course and leaves a written test, but only the part of it that covers Indiana laws and rules, which is the wording of section 5(b)(3). Indiana spells the third one "accredited advisor in insurance" in the statute. The subsection also accepts "another nationally recognized designation approved by the commissioner", so the three named here are a floor rather than the whole list.

  5. Route 5 Hold a bachelor degree in insurance

    State exam required

    • A degree in insurance

IC 27-1-15.6-9(e). A bachelor degree in insurance removes the pre-licensing course and leaves the part of the written test that covers Indiana laws and rules. The statute names no credit count and no subject list beyond the degree itself, so neither is shown.
