The Indiana Title license

Title

Sells title insurance in Indiana. Ten hours and no examination, so the course is the whole of the qualification rather than preparation for a test. It is also the one Indiana line that no designation and no degree shortens.

Course

10 hrs

The shortest single course route.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 10-hour course

No state exam for this license

    • 10 hours of pre-licensing education for the Title line, approved by the Department

IC 27-1-15.7-5(a)(2)(F) carries the figure and names the subjects it has to cover: ethical practices in marketing and selling title insurance, Indiana insurance law, the principles of title insurance including underwriting and escrow, and the federal Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act. No examination follows it. IC 27-1-15.6-5(a) asks a written examination of a producer applicant in general, and IC 27-1-15.6-18(4) lets the commissioner license without one for any kind of insurance the commissioner finds does not require an examination to demonstrate professional competency. That subsection is where the Department's four no-examination licenses come from, and the other three it names are limited line credit, travel and portable electronics, each of which section 18 lists by name. So the course is the whole of the qualification. The course has to be one the commissioner has certified under IC 27-1-15.7-5, and IC 27-1-15.6-6(c) gives the certificate of completion six months: the examination and the license application both have to happen inside that window.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

No state exam for this license

    • an insurance producer license carrying the Title line of authority in another state

IC 27-1-15.6-9(a). It waives the pre-licensing education and the examination together. The other license has to be current, or else the application has to reach the commissioner within ninety days of its cancellation, with either a certification of good standing from that state or a good standing record for the same line in the producer license registry.

  3. Route 3 Move to Indiana and apply within 90 days

No state exam for this license

    • 90 days Licensed as an insurance producer in another state carrying the Title line of authority there, and applying to become an Indiana resident licensee within ninety days of establishing legal residence in Indiana.

IC 27-1-15.6-9(b). The ninety days run from the day legal residence in Indiana is established, not from the day the other license ends, and the exemption covers only the lines the other state had already granted. It is written as an exemption the commissioner may narrow by rule.

A course is required and nobody sells one

Indiana's ten hours for title carry no examination at all, so the course is the whole of the requirement, and no national seller carries the product.
