The Indiana Independent Adjuster license
Independent Adjuster
Contracts with insurers and self-insurers to investigate, negotiate or settle property, casualty and workers' compensation claims. Indiana is one of the few states that asks an adjuster for a real pre-licensing course, forty hours of it, and one of fewer still where two national sellers are on the register that approves them.

Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.
-
Route 1 Take the 40-hour course
State exam required
Pre-licensing education
-
40 hours of the products, services, duties and responsibilities of an independent adjuster, and the Indiana statutes and rules affecting insurance and the adjusting of claims, approved by the Department
and the examination, inside six months of the course
-
The Indiana Independent Adjuster examination, booked at Pearson VUE with the course completion date entered as it appears on the certificate. The certificate is valid for six months and both the examination and the license application have to happen inside that window.
IC 27-1-28-12(b) is the six findings: eighteen or over, eligible to designate Indiana as the home state, trustworthy, reliable and of good reputation, no act that is a ground for refusal, a prelicensing course of study completed for the line of authority applied for, and the written examination passed. The Department puts the figure on it, forty hours, and points at Sircon's approved courses inquiry under the Adjuster course category to find one. Six courses are on that register and all six carry forty credits, and two of the six belong to national sellers rather than to Indiana schools. IC 27-1-28-14(a) puts two lines of authority on the license, property and casualty insurance and workers' compensation insurance, and Pearson gives one Independent Adjuster paper covering both, which is why this is one license here rather than two. IC 27-1-28-14(b) is worth knowing: an independent adjuster licensed under this chapter is not required to hold any other adjuster, producer or insurance administrator license in Indiana.

Route 2 Hold a national claims certification
Exempt from the state exam
-
UCC Uniform Claims Certification, from Claims and Litigation Management Alliance
IC 27-1-28-15(e) waives both the prelicensing course and the written examination for an individual holding a current claims certification issued by a national or state claims association whose certification program includes a precertification course for new adjusters approved by the department, an examination for new adjusters approved by the department, and an approved continuing education program. The Department names the one it accepts: the Uniform Claims Certification held with the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance, with a copy of the certificate attached to the application. It is the only route here that removes the course and the paper together, and IC 27-1-28-16(c)(2) repeats it for a nonresident.

Route 3 Hold the same line in a state that examines for it
Exempt from the state exam
-
an independent adjuster license for the same line of authority, held in a state where a prelicensing independent adjuster licensure examination is required, and currently in good standing or expired less than 90 days before the application reaches the commissioner
IC 27-1-28-16(a)(1) and (a)(2). The condition is on the other state rather than on the applicant: the license has to come from a state that examines its own independent adjusters, and an Indiana license does not follow from one that did not. A recently expired license works within ninety days, on a certification from the other state that it was in good standing when it expired. Neither the course nor the Indiana examination is required on this route.

Route 4 Five years adjusting the same line
Exempt from the state exam
-
Proof from contracting insurers that the applicant has participated in claims adjudication in the same line of authority , completed within 5 years
IC 27-1-28-16(a)(3). It is the widest of the three exemptions in that section because it asks for no license anywhere, only for insurers who contracted with the applicant to vouch for five years of the work itself. Neither the forty-hour course nor the written examination is required. Nothing on this route is capped or waived at the commissioner's discretion, which is unusual for an experience limb.

Route 5 Move to Indiana and apply within 90 days
Exempt from the state exam
-
90 days Licensed as an independent adjuster in another state where a prelicensing independent adjuster licensure examination is required, then establishing legal residency in Indiana and applying for the resident license less than 90 days after doing so.
IC 27-1-28-16(c)(1). Neither the course nor the examination is required. The same condition on the other state applies here as on the reciprocity route: it has to be a state that examines independent adjusters before licensing them.
