The Indiana Public Adjuster license
Public Adjuster
Advises an insured on a property claim for a fee, under a certificate of authority that makes the holder a Certified Public Adjuster. Indiana fences the work three ways, all of them since 2023: a public adjuster may not file the claim, may not touch a personal injury or automobile liability claim, and may not be the roofer on the same job. Kansas fences it a fourth way, confining its own public adjuster to commercial lines contracts.

Exam

Required on some routes and not others.
Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or experience.
-
Route 1 Pass the public adjuster examination
State exam required
The examination, on a certificate the Department issues first
-
The Indiana Public Adjuster examination, which needs a Certificate of Test Eligibility requested from the Department by email before it can be booked at Pearson VUE. No pre-licensing education is required for it.
and the bond, renewed every year
-
A surety bond of $10,000 payable to the State of Indiana, conditioned on the faithful performance of the holder's duties under Title 27 and the Department's rules, dated not more than six months before the application and renewed annually.
IC 27-1-27-2 issues a certificate of authority rather than a license and says what the holder is called: "Any individual or corporation who, or which, shall have received from the commissioner of insurance a public adjuster's certificate of authority shall be styled and be known as a 'Certified Public Adjuster'."IC 27-1-27-6(a) names six things the examination covers and the third is unusual: Indiana insurance law, inventory and appraisal procedures, building construction, the standard fire policy, insurance contracts on real or personal property, and coverage questions on business interruption, improvements and betterments, replacement cost, concurrent and noncurrent apportionment, coinsurance and contribution. IC 27-1-27-3(b) confines the resident certificate to a bona fide resident of Indiana and 3(c) opens a nonresident certificate to somebody holding an equivalent certificate or license elsewhere.

Route 2 A year adjusting in Indiana as your principal occupation
Exempt from the state exam
The year, and the commissioner's finding on it
-
1 year Having transacted the business of adjusting losses covered by policies of insurance within Indiana, as a public adjuster and as the applicant's principal occupation or business, for at least one year immediately preceding the application, and being determined by the commissioner to be competent to act as a public adjuster.
and the bond, renewed every year
-
The same $10,000 surety bond payable to the State of Indiana. It conditions the certificate rather than the route, so it is on both.
IC 27-1-27-6(b). It is a discretionary waiver rather than an entitlement: the commissioner "may" issue the certificate without examination, and the year has to have been public adjusting in Indiana as the applicant's principal occupation immediately before the application. The same subsection excuses a renewal applicant from the examination outright.

No national seller sells a course for this license. Indiana requires no pre-licensing education for a public adjuster and its own table says so, and the Department gates the paper behind a Certificate of Test Eligibility it emails on request rather than behind a course. WebCE sells an Indiana adjuster course and it is the independent adjuster's forty hours, which this license does not take.
