Getting an insurance license in Louisiana
Louisiana licenses through the Louisiana Department of Insurance, which calls the licensee a producer. Which license you need depends on what you intend to sell, and the requirements differ sharply between them.
License types
-
Appraiser and Umpire Registration
The registration a person needs before serving as the appraiser or the umpire named in the appraisal clause of a Louisiana property policy, the mechanism that settles what a first party loss is worth when the insurer and the insured disagree. Louisiana and Iowa are the two states here that regulate the appraisal clause this way, and they do it differently: Iowa issues an appraiser license and an umpire license and examines both, and Louisiana takes one application and one fee for a registration that may name either role or both, with no examination at all.

Is a course required?
Louisiana requires pre-licensing education for Bail Bond Apprentice Program apprentices , at 8 hours.
Eight hours of instruction in applicable underwriting principles, state laws and regulations, and ethical practices, to be completed before the end of the apprenticeship. It is the one Louisiana education requirement Act 273 kept, and the act rewrote it rather than repealing it: the old text pointed at the prelicensing program in R.S. 22:1571, and the amendment replaced that pointer with the eight hours written out, because 1571 was being repealed in the same act. The instruction must be given by an insurance trade association, an insurance company admitted in Louisiana, or an accredited college or university.

Louisiana requires no pre-licensing course for Industrial fire, Surplus lines, Title, Limited life, health and accident, Surety, Credit, Variable life and variable annuity, Travel, Specialty limited lines credit.
The Department states that no prelicensing education is required for these. A sourced zero, not an absence.

Louisiana requires no pre-licensing course for Life, Accident and health or sickness, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Title, Credit, Every other producer line.
A sourced zero with a date on it. Since 2022-06-03 Louisiana has asked no prelicensing course of an insurance producer: R.S. 22:1546(A) now finds the applicant fit on age, residency, character, fees, the examination and, where it applies, written consent under 18 U.S.C. 1033, and nothing else. The examination survives under R.S. 22:1545(A), and R.S. 22:1551 waives it for someone previously licensed for the same lines in another state.

Fees
| Charge | Paid to | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Producer license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(3)(b), the first time applicant fee for a producer license. The same subparagraph charges a further $75 for each application to add lines, so a producer taking a second line of authority pays it twice. The adjusters and the public adjuster are priced separately at 22:821(A)(23) and (24) and no longer sit in this row, even though the figure happens to match. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $75.00 |
| Renewal Due in the licensee's birth month, paid through the Department's portal. A renewal is not a cost of getting a first license, so it is scoped to nothing and no cost page totals it. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $50.00 |
| Reinstatement The Department breaks it down itself: the $50 renewal plus a $50 reinstatement fee. It is a charge on a lapsed license, so it is scoped to nothing. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $100.00 |
| Surplus lines broker | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $250.00 |
| Appointment, per company La. R.S. 22:821(A)(3)(b), "initial company appointment", $45. The Department's page had been read as $20, which is neither the initial appointment nor the renewal: the statute sets $45 to appoint and $35 a year to renew, due by January 1, and $100 either way for a business entity. It is charged per insurer and is the insurer's charge rather than the applicant's, so it is scoped to nothing. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $45.00 |
| Claims adjuster license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(23)(b), first time applicant, resident and nonresident alike, with the biennial renewal at the same $75. A catastrophe or emergency claims adjuster pays $25 under (23)(c) and a business entity $75 under (23)(a). Failing to renew on time costs a further $50 per license under (23)(d). | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $75.00 |
| Public adjuster license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(24)(b), first time applicant, resident and nonresident alike, with the biennial renewal at the same $75. Louisiana prices the public adjuster exactly as it prices a claims adjuster, which is not true in most states: North Carolina charges the same $75 for both, Vermont charges the public adjuster $200 against an adjuster's $120. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $75.00 |
| Application to add lines La. R.S. 22:821(A)(3)(b). Charged for each application adding lines of authority to an existing producer license, at the same $75 the first license costs, so a producer holding three lines taken separately has paid $225. It is scoped to nothing because a page carrying one line of authority does not owe it: the first license fee already covers the first line. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $75.00 |
| Viatical settlement provider license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(19)(c), first time applicant, renewing annually at $500. It is twenty times what the broker and the investment agent pay and the only viatical license Louisiana prices in four figures. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $1,000.00 |
| Viatical settlement broker license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(19)(a), first time applicant, with the annual renewal at the same $50. A life or annuity producer acting as a broker under R.S. 22:1792(A)(1) pays nothing, because they take no license out. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $50.00 |
| Viatical settlement investment agent license La. R.S. 22:821(A)(19)(b), first time applicant, with the annual renewal at the same $50. | Louisiana Department of Insurance | $50.00 |
