Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Complete the 8-hour apprentice instruction

    State exam required

    • 8 hours of instruction in applicable underwriting principles, state laws and regulations, and ethical practices, approved by the Department

La. R.S. 22:1574(A)(4) as amended by Act 273 of 2022. The eight hours belong to the Bail Bond Apprentice Program and are completed before the end of the apprenticeship rather than before the examination, and they are the only prelicensing instruction Louisiana kept when it repealed the rest in the same act. The act also says who may teach them, and it is a closed list of three: an insurance trade association, an insurance company admitted to do business in Louisiana, or an accredited public or private college or university. No commercial prelicensing seller is on that list, which is why nothing on this site is matched to these eight hours. What the amendment did was strike the words "the registered insurance producer and bail bond producer prelicensing program as provided for in R.S. 22:1571" and put the eight hours in their place, which is the repeal and the survival visible in one sentence.

  2. Route 2 Have held the same lines in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • Previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state

La. R.S. 22:1551(A), reenacted by the same Act 273 that repealed the rest: an applicant previously licensed for the same lines in another state "shall not be required to complete any prelicensing education or an examination", either while still licensed there or within ninety days of cancellation, with good standing certified by the prior state or visible in the NAIC Producer Database.

  3. Route 3 Move to Louisiana holding this line in your old home state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days of establishing legal residence in Louisiana, having held the same line as a licensed producer in the previous state

La. R.S. 22:1551(B), also reenacted by Act 273. Neither prelicensing education nor an examination for a line already held, and the ninety days run from establishing residence rather than from the old license ending, which is the same pair of clocks Connecticut, Colorado and Minnesota run.

A course is required and nobody sells one

No national seller carries a Louisiana bail course, and the eight hours are taught by an insurance trade association, an admitted insurer or an accredited college under La. R.S. 22:1574(A)(4), none of which is a catalog.
