Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

Tennessee asks no pre-licensing course of this line. 2023 Public Chapter 57, section 2 deleted Tenn. Code Ann. 56-6-106(a)(3), the general course requirement, outright on 2023-03-21, and the 2024 act that put a course back put it on title alone. TDCI's own procedure page says the same thing from the other end: the 30 hours are required "for applicants applying for a title insurance line of authority" and every other applicant goes straight to the examination. The rule that still asks 20 hours of six lines, 0780-01-56-.06, was last amended in 2011 and has outlived its statute. The examination is Pearson VUE's, the scores reach the Department electronically, and the application cannot be filed for 48 hours after the sitting. The filing fee is $50 through NIPR. Tennessee lists it as one of the seven producer classifications and does not condition it on holding Life first, which Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Utah and West Virginia all do in their different ways.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an insurance producer license carrying the Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority in the applicant's home state

TDCI runs non-residents through a separate procedure headed "without Exams", which covers non-residents, limited lines producers and anybody else exempt from a written examination. Fees are retaliatory for non-residents. On the title line this same exemption is worth less than it looks: 2023 removed the words "prelicensing education or" from it, so holding title elsewhere waives Tennessee's examination and not its thirty hours.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance requires no pre-licensing course for this license, so there is nothing here to price. Anyone selling you one is selling exam practice.
