More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by a license already held or experience.

  1. Route 1 Hold a Tennessee insurance license other than a limited lines one

    • a current Tennessee insurance license, excluding limited lines

    and club relationship

    • A relationship form signed and certified by a representative of the automobile club the applicant will represent.

    The Department's procedure gives the applicant a choice between holding an insurance license and producing a background check, and the license limb excludes limited lines by name. The relationship form is not optional on either limb: a representative of the club has to sign and certify it. The license expires annually on 30 June and renews for another $20 at NIPR.

  2. Route 2 Produce a background check instead

    • A Personnel Selection Report or criminal background check filed with the application, in place of holding a Tennessee insurance license.

    • A relationship form signed and certified by a representative of the automobile club the applicant will represent.

    This is the limb for somebody with no insurance license at all, and it is why the automobile club agent is a way into the business rather than an endorsement on a license already held. The Department's page cites TN Code 55-18-101 through 109, which is the motor vehicle title rather than title 56, and the Agent Licensing Section issues it anyway.
