The Oklahoma Customer Service Representative license

Customer Service Representative

The person in the agency's own office who helps transact the business of insurance for the producer, broker or agency that appointed them. Oklahoma reaches it by definition rather than by a licensing section: the Code says a customer service representative is required to be licensed as an insurance producer, so the license is a producer license and the examination goes with it.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or moving here already licensed.

  1. Route 1 Pass the producer examination for the lines to be handled

    State exam required

    • At least eighteen years old, no act that is a ground for denial under 36 O.S. 1435.13, the fees at 1435.23 paid, and a showing under 1435.7(C) that the applicant is competent, trustworthy, financially responsible and of good personal and business reputation. The appointment is by an insurance producer, a surplus lines insurance broker, a managing general agent or an insurance agency, and the work is done from that person's or agency's office.

36 O.S. 1435.2(3) defines a customer service representative as "an individual who is required to be licensed as an insurance producer under the laws of this state and assists the insurance producer, broker, or agency in transacting the business of insurance from the office of the insurance producer, broker, or agency", and 1435.2(7) folds the customer service representative into the definition of insurance producer outright. So the qualifying route is the producer's: 1435.6 asks for the written examination on the lines applied for, 1435.7 for the findings the Commissioner must make, and no part of the Act asks for a course. 1435.2(3) also adds the sentence that separates this license from the producer's own, "and whose salary may vary based on the production or volume of applications or premiums", which is the Department's wording on its list of license types. There is no Customer Service Representative paper on the examination vendor's list; the papers are the producer papers for the lines the representative handles.

  2. Route 2 Move to Oklahoma and apply within 90 days

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days Licensed as an insurance producer in another state carrying the lines the representative handles there on the day legal residence in Oklahoma was established, and applying to become a resident licensee within 90 days of that day.

36 O.S. 1435.10(B). No examination and no continuing education is required for any line of authority held in the prior state on the day residency was established, except where the Commissioner determines otherwise by regulation, and OAC 365:25-3-16(a)(4) repeats the waiver in the rules. Oklahoma is the only state on this site that waives the continuing education in the same breath as the examination, and it has no reciprocity route to a resident license at all: 1435.10 has two limbs and holding a live license elsewhere while staying put opens neither.

The Oklahoma products sellers do carry are all for a producer line or for the adjuster; Aceable sells nothing in Oklahoma at all. Oklahoma asks for no course here and its examination vendor publishes no paper for this license, so there is nothing to sell.
