The New Hampshire Managing General Agent license

Managing General Agent

Underwrites and binds for an insurer on a scale that makes it more than a producer. New Hampshire licenses it separately, renews it every year rather than every two, and requires a producer license underneath.

Every way to qualify

  1. Route 1 Hold a New Hampshire producer license and be licensed as an MGA

    State exam required

    • a New Hampshire insurance producer license, which may be a nonresident license where the MGA acts for a domestic insurer on risks located outside the state

RSA 402-E:2, I forbids acting as a managing general agent until the commissioner has issued the license, and II and III then stack it: nobody may act as an MGA on New Hampshire risks for an insurer licensed here unless they are a licensed producer here, and nobody may act as an MGA for a New Hampshire domiciled insurer on outside risks unless licensed as a producer here, which may be a nonresident license. So the examination in front of this license is the producer examination, and there is no separate MGA paper. Paragraphs IV, V and VI are three discretions rather than requirements: the commissioner may require a bond for the insurer’s protection, may require an errors and omissions policy, and may require financial and other data as part of the application. The renewal cycle is the odd one out. Almost everything New Hampshire licenses renews biennially; RSA 402-E:2, I says the MGA license "shall be renewed annually thereafter".

No national seller sells a course for this license. There is no managing general agent paper in New Hampshire; the examination is the producer one underneath, which has a course list on this site.
