Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a license held in another state or moving here already licensed.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

    RSA 402-J:5, I asks a resident individual applying for a producer license to pass a written examination unless exempt under 402-J:9, and 402-J:6, I is the list of what the commissioner must find before approving the application. Read it in the statute rather than in a summary, because the gap is the point: "(a) Is at least 18 years of age. (b) Has not committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation set forth in RSA 402-J:12. (c) [Repealed.] (d) Has paid the fees set forth in RSA 400-A:29. (e) Has successfully passed the examinations for the line or lines of authority for which the person has applied."Paragraph (c) was the education requirement and it was repealed with effect from July 11, 2008. New Hampshire's zero is a dated repeal with the empty slot still sitting in the list, which is North Dakota's shape too. A lapsed license can be reinstated without a new examination for 24 months under 402-J:7, III, twice the usual twelve.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an insurance producer license carrying the Credit line of authority in another state

    RSA 402-J:9, I. Somebody previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state completes neither prelicensing education nor an examination, while that license is current or if the application arrives within 90 days of its cancellation with good standing certified by the other state or shown in the NAIC producer database.

  3. Route 3 Move to New Hampshire and apply within 90 days

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days Licensed as an insurance producer in another state carrying the Credit line of authority there, and applying to become a New Hampshire resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence.

    RSA 402-J:9, II. Somebody licensed as a producer in another state who moves here has 90 days from establishing legal residence to apply as a resident licensee under 402-J:6, written as a duty. No prelicensing education or examination is required for a line of authority previously held in the prior state except where the commissioner determines otherwise by regulation.
