The Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser license

Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser

Inspects a damaged vehicle and writes the appraisal an insurer pays against. It is the one Massachusetts license with a course requirement, the one licensed by a board rather than by the Division itself, and the one whose examination asks the candidate to appraise a real damaged car.

Course

No count

A course is required and the regulator publishes no hour count for it.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Complete a Board approved damage appraiser course

    State exam required

    The course

    • A pre-licensing course in damage appraising, approved by the Auto Damage Appraiser Licensing Board

and three months under a licensed appraiser

    • 3 months A work experience letter from a licensed Massachusetts appraiser verifying at least three months of supervised experience, signed, dated and sealed by that appraiser.

    and the two examinations

    • Part I, a written paper of 100 multiple choice, true or false and identification questions, sat at a Pearson test center within 12 months of the application being approved, and then Part II, a practical examination at which the candidate writes an appraisal on a damaged motor vehicle.

The Board asks for a certificate from a Board approved damage appraiser course, and it publishes the list of who gives one. Twenty entries, and eight of them are shut to an ordinary applicant: six insurers run the course for their own staff and two regional vocational high schools run it for their own students. The twelve left are Massachusetts community colleges, regional vocational schools and adult education programs, one trade association and one private training company, and not one is a national seller. No hour count appears anywhere on the Board's pages, which is why the mandate carries no figure. The Board's own examination note tells a candidate to schedule the written paper with Prometric, and the Division's examinations page says every Massachusetts insurance licensing examination has been sat at a Pearson test center since 22 July and that a candidate must get a voucher from the Division by email before each attempt. The Division's page is the current one.

  2. Route 2 Two years of qualifying Massachusetts appraisal experience instead

    State exam required

The experience that stands in for the course

    • 2 years Documentation showing two years of qualifying Massachusetts appraisal experience, which the Board takes in place of the course certificate.

and three months under a licensed appraiser

    • 3 months A work experience letter from a licensed Massachusetts appraiser verifying at least three months of supervised experience, signed, dated and sealed by that appraiser.

    and the two examinations

    • Part I, the written paper, and then Part II, the practical appraisal of a damaged motor vehicle. Neither is waived on this route.

The Board's application list writes the course and this as alternatives in one line, and this is the limb that keeps Massachusetts's course requirement from being absolute. The statute behind both is thinner than either: M.G.L. c. 26, section 8G asks an applicant to furnish satisfactory proof of being eighteen or over, of good moral character, and of "the educational qualifications required for graduation from high school or that he possesses relevant work experience deemed satisfactory by the board". A high school diploma is not an appraising course, so the course requirement is the Board's rather than the legislature's, and the Board is the only body on this site that both sets a course requirement and publishes the list of who may teach it while its own statute asks for neither.
