The Hawaii Public Adjuster license

Public Adjuster

The same qualification and the same paper as the independent adjuster, exercised on behalf only of insureds, with a $10,000 bond filed before the license issues. Hawaii allows one person to hold both licenses and forbids using them on the same claim.

Every way to qualify

  1. Route 1 Pass the Hawaii Adjuster examination and file the bond

    State exam required

Domicile, which reaches beyond the State

    • Domiciled in Hawaii, or in a state that will permit residents of Hawaii to act as adjusters in that other state

and experience, special education or training, with no number on any of the three

    • Experience, special education, or training with reference to the handling of loss claims under insurance contracts, of sufficient duration and extent reasonably to make the individual competent to fulfill the responsibilities of an adjuster

and the public adjuster's bond, filed before the license issues

    • A surety bond of $10,000 in favor of the State from an authorized corporate surety the commissioner approves, contingent on the adjuster accounting to any insured whose claim is handled for money or any settlement received, maintained in force while licensed and cancellable by the surety only on sixty days' written notice; $10,000 in cash or approved securities may be deposited with the commissioner instead

431:9-222(b) adds the bond at 431:9-223 to the four requirements every adjuster meets, and nothing else changes: the Division sends the independent and the public applicant to the same Hawaii Adjuster paper, and its flat statement that there is no reciprocity for adjusters covers both. 431:9-223(b) lets the surety cancel on sixty days' notice, which is twice the thirty days Washington and Idaho allow, and 431:9-223(c) is the alternative almost nobody else offers: $10,000 in cash or approved securities deposited with the commissioner, held on the same conditions as the bond. 431:9-224 permits the two licenses concurrently and charges the full fee for each; 431:9-226(b) then forbids representing the insurer and the insured in the same transaction, which is the same bar West Virginia writes at 33-12B-2(c) and Idaho at 41-5803(2).
