The Delaware Crop license

Crop

Sells multi-peril crop insurance in Delaware. It is not one of the nine lines the Code writes out, and it exists because the Code’s tenth entry leaves room for one: the Department names it and gives it an examination of its own.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the Delaware crop examination

    State exam required

18 DE Admin. Code 506 section 5.2: everybody applying for a multi-peril crop insurance producer license must pass a written examination as required by 18 Del. C. 1705, and section 4.0 sends the application back to 1706 and 1707(1). The Department says the same thing in its own licensing procedures, in one line under Producer: a resident crop producer takes the Delaware crop exam in order to qualify. Delaware's examination vendor sets InsDE-Crop31, one hour. Nothing in the regulation or the statute asks for a course. Where this line comes from is worth knowing, because 1707(a) writes out nine lines and crop is not among them: 1707(a)(10) is a catch-all for any other line of insurance permitted under state laws or regulations, and this is a regulation permitting one.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same line in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an insurance producer license carrying a crop line of authority in another state

18 Del. C. 1709(a). Somebody previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state completes neither prelicensing education nor an examination. The exemption holds while that other license is current, or if the application arrives within 90 days of its cancellation and the prior state certifies good standing at that point, or the NAIC producer database shows it for the line being asked for.

No national seller sells a course for this license. Delaware sets a crop producer examination of its own, InsDE-Crop31, and nobody sells preparation for it. Two sellers carry crop products in other states and neither lists one here.
