The California Life and Disability Insurance Analyst license
Life and Disability Insurance Analyst
Advises people about their life or disability insurance for a fee paid by somebody other than an insurer. Its two qualifications are unlike any other California license: a minimum age of twenty-three where every other one takes eighteen, and five years holding BOTH the life-only and the accident and health licenses before the applicant may sit the paper.

California Insurance Code section 1848 defines the analyst as somebody who "for a fee or compensation of any kind, paid by or derived from any person or source other than an insurer, advises, purports to advise, or offers to advise any person insured", so the license is about who pays rather than about what is sold. The minimum age is twenty-three, where every other license on the Department's schedule takes eighteen. And the Department writes the experience bar as a condition on the EXAMINATION rather than on the license: "Individuals must be licensed as both a life-only (LO) and accident and health (AH) licensee for five years prior to taking the qualifying examination."The paper is the Department's own, "prepared and administered by the Department" rather than by a vendor, and at $155 it is the most expensive examination on California's schedule. Continuing education is Not required. $622 to file, $622 to renew, $933 late.

Nothing a school sells reaches this license. What it takes is five years holding two other California licenses and a paper the Department writes and administers itself, for which it publishes its own Life and Disability Analyst Examination Objectives as the study guide.
