The Wyoming Adjuster license

Adjuster

Investigates and settles losses for insurers, on a license carrying property, casualty and crop lines of authority. Wyoming grants a designated home state license it says is accepted in every US state, and it publishes two lists of which other states' designations it will take back.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a designation already held or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the Wyoming adjuster examination

    State exam required

    • A fingerprint background check, for which the Department mails a fingerprinting packet after the application has been received rather than before

The Department's resident route is three steps and no course is in any of them: pass the Wyoming Insurance Adjuster Licensing Exam through Pearson VUE, apply and pay, and be fingerprinted. Anyone 18 or older may apply. The lines of authority are property, casualty and crop. On study material the Department is careful and worth quoting, because it is a disclaimer rather than a register: "The Wyoming Department of Insurance does not endorse any providers for pre-licensing education. The providers below are known to have pre-licensing study materials. They are listed for informational purposes only."It then names two on the adjuster page, Adjuster Pro and Agent Broker Training Center, neither of which is one of the seven sellers surveyed here.

  2. Route 2 Take Wyoming as your designated home state

    State exam required

    • A fingerprint background check, for which the Department mails a fingerprinting packet after the application has been received rather than before

For somebody whose own state does not license adjusters. The Department's claim for it is the widest on this site: "Wyoming offers a designated home state license that is accepted in all US states."It is a separate paper, the Wyoming Designated Home State Adjuster exam, rather than the resident one, and the rest of the process is the same. Texas is the other state here that sells its designation hard enough to have its own page on this site; Wyoming's difference is that it publishes the reciprocity test it applies to everybody else's designations in the same breath.

  3. Route 3 Hold a CAP certification, for the crop line only

    Exempt from the state exam

The federal certification, in place of the crop paper

    • CAP Crop Adjuster Proficiency Program certification, which the Department calls a CAP card and accepts in place of the Wyoming crop examination, from National Crop Insurance Services, under a program approved by the Risk Management Agency of the United States Department of Agriculture

    and fingerprints, after the application

    • A fingerprint background check, for which the Department mails a fingerprinting packet after the application has been received rather than before

The Department writes it twice, once as a note on the exam step, "If you are applying to be a crop insurance adjuster you may bypass the exam if you hold a CAP certification", and again on the application step, "If you are applying for the crop line of authority you must pass the crop exam OR hold your CAP card prior to applying". This is the fourth state in four days to hang something on the same federal program and the third to hang an examination on it: Washington's Office calls it pre-licensing education and requires it of a federal crop adjuster; Hawaii takes the card in place of its paper under 431:9-222.5(a)(3); Wyoming takes it in place of one line's paper on a license with two other lines. The program is the same and the three regulators describe it three ways, which is why this site prints each one's own words rather than a house translation.

  4. Route 4 Hold an adjuster license in your resident state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an adjuster license in a resident state that licenses adjusters, whose lines of authority grant at least as much as Wyoming's property, casualty or crop lines; Wyoming will not reciprocate a home state license that grants less

Wyoming reciprocates the resident license and grants the same lines of authority, and refuses where the home state's lines grant less than property, casualty or crop. Where the applicant cannot get an acceptable license at home, a designated home state license from another state will do, provided that state examined the applicant, fingerprinted them, and requires at least 24 hours of continuing education every two years including three of ethics. The Department publishes two lists against that test and they are unusually blunt. Residents of AK, AZ, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, KY, LA, ME, MI, MN, MS, MT, NC, NH, NM, NV, NY, OK, OR, PR, RI, SC, TX, UT, VT and WV must hold a resident license at home, because Wyoming will not reciprocate a designated home state license from any of them. AL, AR, FL, ID, LA, MN, MT, NC, NM, NV, OK, TX, UT, WA and WV offer designations Wyoming will take only where resident licensure is unavailable. The Department adds that it is still compiling the list of acceptable designated home state licenses, so the second list is a work in progress rather than a closed set.
