The Wisconsin Reinsurance Intermediary Broker license

Reinsurance Intermediary Broker

Places reinsurance cessions for a ceding insurer without the power to bind the reinsurer. Wisconsin licenses it out of the administrative code rather than the statutes, and reaches brokers working from other states as well as this one.

No state exam for this license

    • An application through NIPR and the fee. A nonresident applicant must hold a reciprocal license in the home state.

    s. Ins 47.03 defines the broker as any person, other than an officer or employee of the ceding insurer, who solicits, negotiates or places reinsurance cessions or retrocessions on behalf of a ceding insurer, and the Office states the prohibition in two limbs: nobody may act as one in this state unless licensed here, and nobody may act as one in another state unless licensed here or for that function in a state with a substantially similar law. The authority for the license is s. 628.04(5), which lets the commissioner require it by rule rather than requiring it itself. There is no examination and no course for either kind. ch. Ins 47 also licenses the firm at $100, and an individual who is a member, employee, officer or director of a licensed firm need not hold the individual license unless they are to be its designated responsible licensed producer.

The Wisconsin products sellers do carry are all for a major producer line or for the adjuster paper; Aceable sells nothing in Wisconsin at all. Wisconsin asks for no course here and its examination vendor publishes no paper for this license, so there is nothing to sell.
