The Texas Life Settlement Broker / Expectancy Estimator license

Life Settlement Broker / Expectancy Estimator

Negotiates the sale of an existing life policy from its original owner to a settlement provider. A life or health agent of a year's standing registers for it instead of applying for it, which is the only place Texas splits a license that way.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by a license already held or experience.

  1. Route 1 Register on a life or health agent license held for a year

No state exam for this license

    • 1 year a Texas life or health insurance agent license

    • or

1 year a life or health insurance agent license held for at least a year in the applicant's home state, together with a Texas non-resident life or health agent license

TDI routes these applicants to a different product entirely, a "Life Stlmt Bkr Regr - Life Agt" registration rather than the license, and it is the year of agent licensure that decides which. No examination either way: TDI states in terms that no exam is needed for a life settlement broker license.

  2. Route 2 Apply for the license itself

No state exam for this license

    • Acting as a life settlement broker or life expectancy estimator without the year of life or health agent licensure the registration route needs, with the documents TDI's individual life settlement application list requires

The route for everybody the registration does not cover. Chapter 1111A governs it, and TDI notes on its own page that a life settlement can be a securities product as well, which puts the later transactions under the State Securities Board while only the first sale, from the original owner to the provider, is TDI's.

The Texas Department of Insurance requires no pre-licensing course for this license, so there is nothing here to price.
