Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a license held in another state or a license already held.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

    TDI's page starts at the examination and asks for no pre-licensing course. Two waivers are listed and a designation is not one of them, which is the difference between this license and the general lines life, accident, health and HMO license sitting beside it. The examination has to be passed before applying, and the application has to reach TDI within a year of the pass or the examination is sat again.

  2. Route 2 Hold the same license in a reciprocal state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a life agent license in good standing in a reciprocal state

    TDI's page waives the examination for a non-resident who holds the license in good standing in a reciprocal state. It is a waiver of the examination and not of the application: the fee, the fingerprints and the Sircon filing all stand.

  3. Route 3 Reinstate a license that expired between 90 days and a year ago

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a Texas life agent license that expired more than 90 days and less than one year ago

    TDI lists an expired license among the reasons no examination is needed, and it is bounded at both ends: inside the first 90 days the renewal process is used instead, and after a year the examination comes back. So this route begins where renewal stops.
