The Texas Funeral Pre-arrangement Life license

Funeral Pre-arrangement Life

Sells life insurance written to fund a pre-arranged funeral. Like the county mutual license, its five hours of training and its examination both come from the appointing insurance company.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the five-hour company class and pass the company examination

    State exam required

    • 5 hours of training given by the funeral pre-arrangement life insurance company that will appoint the applicant

A five-hour training class and an examination taken and passed through the funeral pre-arrangement life insurance company the applicant will work for. Unlike the county mutual license this one carries no designation waiver: the only reason TDI gives for not sitting the examination is a license expired between 90 days and a year. Texas does not send this applicant to Pearson VUE. Both the class and the examination come from the appointing company, which is the same delegation Kentucky makes for its rental vehicle line, and it is why no school sells the hours. A one-time 180-day temporary license is offered for this license and is issued once and never renewed. Its 40 hours of training are given by the appointing company under Tex. Ins. Code 4001.160(a), which is a duty on the employer rather than on the applicant, and the temporary holder still has to pass the examination inside the 180 days to keep the license.

  2. Route 2 Reinstate a license that expired between 90 days and a year ago

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a Texas funeral pre-arrangement life license that expired more than 90 days and less than one year ago

TDI lists an expired license among the reasons no examination is needed, and it is bounded at both ends: inside the first 90 days the renewal process is used instead, and after a year the examination comes back. So this route begins where renewal stops. A non-resident applying afresh needs an active funeral pre-arrangement life license, or one of greater authority, in good standing in the home state, and TDI does not list that as an examination waiver.

A course is required and nobody sells one

There is nothing for a school to sell. Texas requires five hours of training and an examination for this license and TDI puts both on the appointing insurance company, not on a provider.
