The Texas County Mutual license

County Mutual

Sells the policies of a Texas county mutual insurance company. Its five hours of training and its licensing examination both come from the appointing company rather than from a school or from Pearson VUE.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the five-hour company class and pass the company examination

    State exam required

    • 5 hours of training given by the county mutual insurance company that will appoint the applicant

TDI is explicit that both halves belong to the appointing company: a five-hour training class and an examination taken and passed through the county mutual insurance company the applicant will work for. The Sircon application carries the passing result, or CPCU documentation in its place, and has to arrive within one year of the pass. Texas does not send this applicant to Pearson VUE. Both the class and the examination come from the appointing company, which is the same delegation Kentucky makes for its rental vehicle line, and it is why no school sells the hours. A one-time 180-day temporary license is offered for this license and is issued once and never renewed. Its 40 hours of training are given by the appointing company under Tex. Ins. Code 4001.160(a), which is a duty on the employer rather than on the applicant, and the temporary holder still has to pass the examination inside the 180 days to keep the license.

  2. Route 2 Hold the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation

    Exempt from the state exam

    • CPCU Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, from The Institutes

TDI names the designation as a reason no examination is needed, and its own application instructions accept CPCU documentation in place of a passing result from the appointing company.

  3. Route 3 Hold the same license in a reciprocal state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a county mutual license in good standing in a reciprocal state

TDI's page waives the examination for a non-resident who holds the license in good standing in a reciprocal state. It is a waiver of the examination and not of the application: the fee, the fingerprints and the Sircon filing all stand.

  4. Route 4 Reinstate a license that expired between 90 days and a year ago

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a Texas county mutual license that expired more than 90 days and less than one year ago

TDI lists an expired license among the reasons no examination is needed, and it is bounded at both ends: inside the first 90 days the renewal process is used instead, and after a year the examination comes back. So this route begins where renewal stops.

A course is required and nobody sells one

There is nothing for a school to sell. Texas requires five hours of training and an examination for this license and TDI puts both on the appointing insurance company, not on a provider.
