Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a license already held, somebody else sponsoring you or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination for the line of authority

    State exam required

    S.C. Code 38-43-20(A) forbids selling, soliciting or negotiating any line of insurance without being licensed for that line of authority, and chapter 38-43 never says what the lines are. The Department's producer page says the same thing the same way, that an applicant must pass the appropriate producer licensing exam for that specific line of authority, and sends them to Pearson VUE for the content outlines. No pre-licensing course: South Carolina repealed that in 2008 for every line except the bail bondsmen, and the Department's own sponsor list says in terms that it does not approve the courses on it. An examination report expires twelve months after it is issued.

  2. Route 2 Hold a South Carolina funeral director's license and sit the life examination only

    State exam required

    • a South Carolina funeral director's license, with a letter of employment from a South Carolina licensed funeral home

    The Department's producer page carries this as its own paragraph: a pre-need producer is only required to pass the life examination, and applies with a copy of the funeral director's license and a letter of employment from a licensed South Carolina funeral home. It narrows the examination rather than waiving it, which is a shape only Montana's funeral clause comes close to on this site, and that one runs the other way by barring funeral directors from two lines.

  3. Route 3 Take over a licensed producer's business on a 180-day temporary license

    Exempt from the state exam

    • Being the surviving spouse or court-appointed personal representative of a licensed producer who has died or become disabled, or a member or employee of a licensed agency in the same position, so that the business can be sold, recovered or staffed

    S.C. Code 38-43-102(A) lets the director issue a temporary producer license for up to 180 days with no examination where one is needed to service an existing insurance business. The qualification is somebody else's license and somebody else's misfortune rather than anything the applicant holds, which is what the sponsorship kind is for.

  4. Route 4 Hold the license in the home state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an insurance producer license in good standing in the applicant's home state, verifiable on the State Producer Licensing Database or certified by that state

    S.C. Code 38-43-70. The Department applies it through NIPR and says that where the license cannot be verified on the State Producer Licensing Database, certification from the home state is required instead. The fee is $25 and is not pro-rated.
