Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

S.C. Code 38-49-20 forbids appraising motor vehicle physical damage claims without a license, sets the biennial fee at $80, and then delegates: the department may prescribe reasonable regulations concerning standards for qualification. No examination and no course are in the chapter. The Department's appraiser page carries the examination, before applying through NIPR, with the certificate expiring twelve months after issue. This is the license the 2026-08-16 scope decision named specifically, because a motor vehicle physical damage appraiser answers to the insurance department while a real estate appraiser does not.

  2. Route 2 Have passed an appraiser examination in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an appraiser license in a home state that requires an appraiser examination, or a certificate from another state where the applicant is licensed and has passed one

The same two-limb reciprocity the adjuster and public adjuster licenses carry, and the same fallback: if neither can be produced, South Carolina's own appraiser examination is sat.
