The Ohio Reinsurance Intermediary license

Reinsurance Intermediary

One license and two jobs: the broker places cessions for a ceding insurer without power to bind, and the manager binds or manages a reinsurer's assumed business. Ohio prices both at $500 and issues them on the same form.

    • Acting as a reinsurance intermediary-broker: soliciting, negotiating or placing reinsurance cessions or retrocessions for a ceding insurer, without authority or power to bind reinsurance on that insurer's behalf.

    • or

Acting as a reinsurance intermediary-manager: having authority to bind, or managing all or part of the assumed reinsurance business of a reinsurer, and acting as the reinsurer's agent.

Ohio Revised Code 3905.81(B) requires the license for either capacity and lets the superintendent accept another state's instead. The manager definition carries four exclusions worth knowing before applying: an employee of the reinsurer, the United States manager of an alien reinsurer's United States branch, an underwriting manager under common control with the reinsurer whose pay does not turn on premium volume, and the manager of a joint reinsurance pool that its own state examines. Ohio issues this to an individual or a business entity and the license expires annually on 31 December. No examination and no course. The Department publishes one set of forms and the fee chart carries one row, which is why this is one file rather than a broker file and a manager file.

Ohio sets no examination and no course for the reinsurance intermediary. No national seller prices a product for it.
