More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 20-hour course

    State exam required

    • 20 hours of pre-licensing education for the Accident & Health line of authority, approved by the Department

    Classroom, distance learning or self-study, from an Ohio approved pre-licensing provider. The provider issues a course completion certificate per line of authority. It is valid for 180 calendar days and the exam must be passed inside that window. Nobody is admitted to an exam without the original, unaltered certificate, and a combined exam takes two of them.

  2. Route 2 Hold a degree in insurance and request the waiver

    State exam required

    • A degree in insurance. An official transcript is required

    A bachelor or associate degree in insurance. The waiver is form INS3276, requested before registering for the exam, and it lasts 180 calendar days. It removes the education and not the examination.

  3. Route 3 Hold one of the designations the Department accepts for this line

    State exam required

    • RHU Registered Health Underwriter, from The American College of Financial Services

    • or

      CEBS Certified Employee Benefit Specialist, from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

    • or

      REBC Registered Employee Benefits Consultant, from The American College of Financial Services

    • or

      HIA Health Insurance Associate, from America's Health Insurance Plans

    The Department lists these against this line specifically, and a designation accepted for one line is not accepted for another. It removes the education and not the examination.
