Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a license held in another state or a license already held.

  1. Route 1 Pass the examination

    State exam required

    • A surety bond or an irrevocable letter of credit issued by a financial institution, filed with the application

No pre-licensing course. S.L. 2025-45, s. 1(a) rewrote G.S. 58-33-30(d) with effect from 2025-10-01 so that the Commissioner may not require any hours of pre-licensing education of anybody, which reaches this license as much as it reaches the producer lines. The crosswalk chart writes the limit into the definition: a public adjuster may "Represent the insured in First Party Property Claims only. May not adjust third party or Casualty claims."Virginia draws the same boundary in almost the same words, which makes two states defining the job by what it cannot touch. The financial responsibility is recorded without a figure because the Department's chart states the requirement and its amount could not be read cleanly from the document.

  2. Route 2 Hold the equivalent license in a home or designated home state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • an equivalent public adjuster license in the applicant's home state or designated home state, either current, or cancelled within the last ninety days with the applicant in good standing there, or shown in good standing on the producer database

The Department's own requirements chart gives the exemption three limbs and any one will do: currently licensed in the home or designated home state; the application arriving within ninety days of the previous license's cancellation with the applicant in good standing; or the home state's producer database showing the applicant licensed in good standing for the kind of insurance sought.

  3. Route 3 Reinstate a license lapsed for less than a year

    Exempt from the state exam

    • a North Carolina public adjuster license lapsed for less than one year whose status is neither Inactive nor Expired

The status is what decides it rather than the lapse alone. A license that has fallen to Inactive has to sit the state examination again; one that has fallen to Expired may in some cases be brought back by making up continuing education instead.

No national seller sells a course for this license. Every North Carolina adjuster product a national seller offers is named for the Adjuster license and none is named for this one.
