More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 40-hour course

    State exam required

    • 40 hours of formal training in a course, program of instruction or seminars, approved by the Department

    Insurance Law 2108(e)(1)(B). The course is what qualifies an applicant to take the examination rather than a separate step beside it. Three things are asked of every public adjuster applicant whichever route they take, and none of them is on this page as a price: fingerprints, five certificates of character from people who have known the applicant five years and are no relation, and a bond in the penal sum of $1,000 under Insurance Law 2108. The bond figure is the sum guaranteed rather than the premium a surety charges to write it, which no regulator publishes.

  2. Route 2 Substitute a year in the insurance business

    State exam required

    • 1 year A minimum of one year of experience in the insurance business, with involvement in sales, underwriting or claims, or other experience the superintendent considers sufficient.

    Insurance Law 2108(e)(1)(A). It qualifies the applicant to sit the examination; it does not replace it.
