CLU Chartered Life Underwriter, from The American College
- or
CLUA Chartered Life Underwriter Associate, from The American College
- or
ChFC Chartered Financial Consultant, from The American College of Financial Services
- or
MSFS Master of Science in Financial Services, from The American College of Financial Services
The Department's exemption is from the pre-licensing course. Nothing on its page exempts an applicant from the examination, and Insurance Law 2103(g) makes the waiver of the examination itself discretionary even for the two designations it names.

Route 3 Hold the same line in another state that licenses New Yorkers on the same basis
Exempt from the state exam

Currently licensed for the same line or lines of authority in another state, or applying within ninety days of that license being cancelled in good standing. The other state must grant non-resident licenses to New York residents on the same basis.
Insurance Law 2103(g)(11) exempts this applicant from the examination and from prelicensing education alike.

Route 4 Move to New York holding the line elsewhere and apply within 90 days
Exempt from the state exam

90 days Licensed in another state, established legal residence in New York, and applied within ninety days. It carries over the lines of authority previously held and nothing else.
Insurance Law 2103(g)(11): no prelicensing education or examination is required for a line already held, except where the superintendent determines otherwise by regulation.

Route 5 Sell travel tickets for a carrier and nothing else
Exempt from the state exam

A ticket selling agent or representative of a railroad company, steamship company, air carrier or public bus carrier, acting under the license only to issue baggage or accident insurance tickets primarily to cover the risk of travel.
Insurance Law 2103(g)(1). It is the first entry in a subsection headed by the words "No such written examination shall be required", and with the examination gone the forty hours go with it: 2103(f)(2)(A) makes the course the thing that qualifies an applicant to sit the paper rather than a step beside it. The Department publishes no page for this and PSI publishes no paper; what the statute names is an ordinary agent license with two limits on it, the seller and what the seller may write.
