The New Jersey Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products license

Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products

Sells insurance whose value moves with a separate account. It is a full line of authority in the statute rather than a limited one, and New Jersey asks it for neither a course nor a paper of its own.

    • The uniform application, declared under penalty of refusal, suspension or revocation to be true, correct and complete; at least 18 years old; no act that is a ground for denial under section 15 of the Producer Licensing Act; and the fee.

N.J.S.A. 17:22A-33(a)(5) is the line: "Variable life and variable annuity products-insurance coverage provided under variable life insurance contracts, variable annuities or any other life insurance or annuity product that reflects the investment experience of a separate account."It is listed with Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, Credit and Personal Lines rather than among the Department's limited lines, and it appears in neither of the Department's two published lists that carry requirements: not in the pre-licensing hours table, which runs Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Title and Limited Line Bail Bonds, and not in the limited lines enumeration. New Jersey's pre-licensing requirement is a closed list and this line is not on it. The Department's own answer names the lines that carry it: "All individuals applying for a resident insurance producer license requesting authority to transact Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Title and Limited Line Bail Bonds who do not qualify for a waiver of prelicensing education must complete a prelicensing education course offered by an approved insurance education provider."Nothing else is on that list, and the hours table beside it prints a figure for those lines and for no others. The Department takes it on an Additional Authority Request Form, which is the $40 additional line of authority charge on its fee page rather than a license of its own.

No national seller sells a course for this license. The New Jersey products sellers do carry are all for a major producer line or for the adjuster paper; Aceable sells nothing in New Jersey at all. New Jersey neither examines this authority nor requires a course for it: it is added to a license already held for a processing fee.
