The Michigan Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products license

Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products

One of the seven lines of insurance Michigan's statute lets a producer qualify in. It is the line with no course behind it: MCL 500.1204a registers a program of study for health, life, property, casualty and personal lines and registers none for this one.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a designation already held.

  1. Route 1 Pass the written examination

    State exam required

MCL 500.1206(1)(e) is the line itself: "variable life and variable annuity products - insurance coverage provided under variable life insurance contracts and variable annuities", one of seven qualifications an individual producer may hold under 1206(1). MCL 500.1204(1) then requires a resident individual applying for a producer license to pass a written examination unless section 1206b exempts them, and 1204(3) makes that examination entry level and directed at the qualification applied for. There is no hour count for this line and the absence is the statute's own: MCL 500.1204a(1)(b) sets the minimum hours of instruction for a registered program of study and names six programs, for health producers, life producers, life and health combined, property producers and solicitors, casualty producers and solicitors, personal lines producers, and property and casualty combined. Variable products appear in none of them. The commissioner may in any case waive "the applicable examination or program of study requirements" under 1204(2) for a limited license, a producer licensed within the preceding twelve months, one of thirteen named designations, or an insurance degree.

  2. Route 2 Hold one of the thirteen designations the statute names

    State exam required

    • CLU Chartered Life Underwriter, from The American College of Financial Services

    • or

ChFC Chartered Financial Consultant, from The American College of Financial Services

    • or

CFP Certified Financial Planner, from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards

    • or

FLMI Fellow, Life Management Institute, from LOMA

    • or

LUTCF Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow, from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors

MCL 500.1204(2)(c) lists thirteen designations that let the commissioner waive the applicable examination or program of study requirements; the five carried here are the ones a variable products applicant is likely to hold. The waiver is discretionary either way, so this route is shown as still requiring the examination, which is the outcome an applicant should plan for.
