The Michigan Reinsurance Intermediary Broker license

Reinsurance Intermediary Broker

Places reinsurance cessions for a ceding insurer without the power to bind it. The absence of that power is the whole definition, and it is what separates this license from the manager’s.

    • Soliciting, negotiating or placing reinsurance cessions or retrocessions on behalf of a ceding insurer, without the authority or power to bind reinsurance on that insurer’s behalf, and not as an officer or employee of the ceding insurer

MCL 500.1151(d), in chapter 11A. No pre-licensing course and no examination: Michigan's own cut score table lists no reinsurance intermediary paper. Two limbs of the definition do the work and both are exclusions. The intermediary must not be an officer or employee of the ceding insurer, and must be without the authority or power to bind reinsurance on that insurer's behalf. The moment the power to bind exists, the license needed is the manager's instead.

No national seller sells a course for this license. There is no examination and no course: MCL 500.1151(d) defines the license by what the holder may not do, bind reinsurance for the ceding insurer, and Michigan's examination table lists no reinsurance paper.
