The Michigan Personal Lines license
Personal Lines
Sells the household half of property and casualty in Michigan. Its twenty hours are property and casualty coursework rather than a course of its own.
Course

The shortest single course route.

Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.
-
Route 1 Take the 20-hour course
State exam required
-
20 hours of pre-licensing education for the Personal Lines line, approved by the Department , completed within 1 year
The statute allows classroom instruction or its equivalent in home study or online courses, so a self-paced course satisfies Michigan. The certificate has to show the course was completed not more than twelve months before the application for examination is received.

-
Route 2 Complete the 40-hour property and casualty program instead
State exam required
-
40 hours of program of study for property and casualty producers and solicitors, approved by the Department , completed within 1 year
MCL 500.1204a(1)(b)(vii) in as many words: a program of study completed under that subparagraph satisfies the program of study requirements for personal lines producers and solicitors. Forty hours rather than twenty, and free to anyone taking property and casualty anyway.

MCL 500.1204(2) lets the commissioner waive "the applicable examination or program of study requirements", so this route can reach the examination as well as the course. It is discretionary either way, and the Department's own page describes requesting it in writing before the examination is scheduled. Shown here as still requiring the exam, because that is the outcome an applicant should plan for.
