The Maryland Surplus Lines license

Surplus Lines

Places business with insurers Maryland has not authorized. It is not a line of its own but a license laid on top of the producer one, it costs $200 rather than $54, and a resident applicant posts a $10,000 surety bond that a nonresident does not.

Every way to qualify

  1. Route 1 Hold a Maryland producer license with property and casualty

No state exam for this license

    • an active Maryland insurance producer license carrying both the property and the casualty lines of authority

The Administration states it on its own license fee sheet: a surplus lines license requires an active producer license with property and casualty lines of authority, and the surplus lines license is issued to expire on the same day as the underlying one. So the cost of this license is the cost of the producer license plus $200 and a $10,000 surety bond, which a nonresident applicant is excused from. It is the fourth shape of a stacked license in this phase: North Dakota asks only for the underlying producer license, the District lets the underlying license issue at the same moment, Iowa adds a second examination and Utah adds three years of experience.

The Maryland products sellers do carry are all for a major producer line or for the adjuster paper; Aceable sells nothing in Maryland at all. Maryland asks for no course here and its examination vendor gives no paper for this license, so there is nothing to sell.
