Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by a license already held or sitting the examination.

  1. Route 1 Sit the Life Producer paper

    State exam required

    The second limb of the same sentence, "or take the Life Producer Exam", which is code 12-KS-01, 90 minutes, $57. It is the paper for a different license, sat for this one. The findings in K.S.A. 40-5003(h) apply on either limb: competent and trustworthy, a good business reputation, experience, training or education qualifying the applicant for the business, and an anti-fraud plan. The application fee is capped at $100 and the annual renewal at $50.

  2. Route 2 Hold a Life Producer license

    Pearson VUE's July 2026 Kansas candidate handbook: "Viatical Settlement Broker licensees must hold a Life Producer license or take the Life Producer Exam."It also names this license among the four that "do not require separate specific licensing examinations", and no viatical paper appears in its table of the eleven Kansas papers. K.S.A. 40-5003 does not carry this condition, which is why it is sourced to the vendor: the Act sets a fee, an application and the Commissioner's findings under 40-5003(h), and the life license prerequisite is published only by the vendor the Department has retained to run its examination program.
