The Kansas Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products license
Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products
Sells cover under variable life insurance contracts and variable annuities in Kansas, and the statute draws the line as widely as Washington does: it reaches any other life insurance or annuity product that reflects the investment experience of a separate account.

Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by a license already held, a license held in another state or moving here already licensed.
-
Route 1 Hold a Life Producer license and FINRA Series 6 or 7
No state exam for this license
Kansas life authority
-
a Kansas insurance agent license carrying the Life line of authority
and securities registration
-
Series 6 FINRA Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative, from Financial Industry Regulatory Authority
- or
Series 7 FINRA General Securities Representative, from Financial Industry Regulatory Authority
Pearson VUE's July 2026 Kansas candidate handbook says it twice. In its list of what licensure in Kansas takes: "Variable Contracts producers require FINRA registration (Series 6 or 7 exam) and a Life Producer license, but no separate 'variable contracts' exam is required."And in its numbered application procedure: "Proof of FINRA registration (Series 6 or 7) is required for Variable Contracts authority."Its table of available examinations carries no variable paper. This page said until 2026-08-20 that the Kansas examination reaches this line, which it does not; the paper the applicant sits is the Life Producer paper, and the securities registration is bought from FINRA rather than from the Kansas Department of Insurance.

Route 2 Have voluntarily surrendered a Kansas license for this class within two years
No state exam for this license
-
a Kansas insurance agent license for the Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products class, voluntarily surrendered not more than two years before the application, with the educational requirements satisfied for the current licensing period
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(3) is the one most likely to apply to somebody coming back: the applicant held a Kansas license for the class being applied for, VOLUNTARILY SURRENDERED it not more than two years before the application, has satisfied the educational requirements for the current licensing period, and the commissioner is satisfied they are trustworthy and competent. A license that lapsed rather than being surrendered, or that was taken away, is not this route.

-
an insurance agent or producer license carrying the Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products line of authority in another state
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(1) covers somebody previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state, while that license is current or if the application arrives within 90 days of its cancellation with good standing certified by the other state or shown in the NAIC producer database.

No state exam for this license
-
90 days Licensed as an insurance agent in another state carrying the Variable Life and Variable Annuity Products line of authority there, and applying to become a Kansas resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence.
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (b) covers moving here: somebody licensed as an agent in another state who moves to Kansas shall apply to become a resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence, and no person previously authorized for any line of authority shall be examined here for the same line except as the commissioner requires by rule and regulation.

The Kansas Insurance Department requires no pre-licensing course for this license, so there is nothing here to price.
