Every way to qualify
More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by applying for it with no examination anywhere, a license already held, a license held in another state or moving here already licensed.

Route 1 Apply for the line; Kansas gives no self-service storage paper
No state exam for this license
Pearson VUE's July 2026 Kansas candidate handbook names this line in the sentence that disposes of four at once: "Travel, Self-Service Storage, Excess/Surplus Lines and Viatical Settlement Broker licenses do not require separate specific licensing examinations."Its table of available examinations carries no such paper either. K.S.A. 40-4903(a)(13)(B) sends this line to be issued in accordance with K.S.A. 40-241, the section that issues an auto rental agency license as a subclassification of casualty and allied lines, so what stands in for an examination here is the sponsoring business rather than a paper.

Route 2 Have voluntarily surrendered a Kansas license for this class within two years
No state exam for this license
-
a Kansas insurance agent license for the Self-Service Storage Unit class, voluntarily surrendered not more than two years before the application, with the educational requirements satisfied for the current licensing period
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(3) is the one most likely to apply to somebody coming back: the applicant held a Kansas license for the class being applied for, VOLUNTARILY SURRENDERED it not more than two years before the application, has satisfied the educational requirements for the current licensing period, and the commissioner is satisfied they are trustworthy and competent. A license that lapsed rather than being surrendered, or that was taken away, is not this route.

Route 3 Hold the same line in another state
No state exam for this license
-
an insurance agent or producer license carrying the Self-Service Storage Unit line of authority in another state
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(1) covers somebody previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state, while that license is current or if the application arrives within 90 days of its cancellation with good standing certified by the other state or shown in the NAIC producer database.

Route 4 Move to Kansas and apply within 90 days
No state exam for this license
-
90 days Licensed as an insurance agent in another state carrying the Self-Service Storage Unit line of authority there, and applying to become a Kansas resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence.
K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (b) covers moving here: somebody licensed as an agent in another state who moves to Kansas shall apply to become a resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence, and no person previously authorized for any line of authority shall be examined here for the same line except as the commissioner requires by rule and regulation.

The Kansas Insurance Department requires no pre-licensing course for this license, so there is nothing here to price.
