The Kansas Credit license

Credit

Limited line credit insurance in Kansas. The statute names it as a line of authority in its own right, and the only instruction requirement attached to it falls on the insurer under 40-4905(e) rather than on the applicant.

Course

No count

A course is required and the regulator publishes no hour count for it.

None of them requires a state exam, because this license has none.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the insurer's program of instruction

No state exam for this license

    • A pre-licensing course in limited line credit insurance, as the insurer's own program of instruction covers it, approved by the Commissioner of Insurance, whose approval of the insurer's program is permissive rather than required

K.S.A. 40-4905(e): "Each insurer that sells, solicits or negotiates any form of limited line credit insurance shall provide a program of instruction that may be approved by the commissioner to each individual employed by or acting on behalf of such insurer to sell, solicit or negotiate limited line credit insurance."The duty is the insurer's, the approval is permissive, and no length or syllabus is set. Pearson VUE's July 2026 Kansas candidate handbook lists eleven papers and none is a credit paper, which is what settles the other half: this page said until 2026-08-20 that the state examination reaches the credit line, and there is no such paper to sit. Nothing a national seller offers can satisfy this, because the course belongs to the appointing insurer.

  2. Route 2 Have voluntarily surrendered a Kansas license for this class within two years

No state exam for this license

    • a Kansas insurance agent license for the Credit class, voluntarily surrendered not more than two years before the application, with the educational requirements satisfied for the current licensing period

K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(3) is the one most likely to apply to somebody coming back: the applicant held a Kansas license for the class being applied for, VOLUNTARILY SURRENDERED it not more than two years before the application, has satisfied the educational requirements for the current licensing period, and the commissioner is satisfied they are trustworthy and competent. A license that lapsed rather than being surrendered, or that was taken away, is not this route.

  3. Route 3 Hold the same line in another state

No state exam for this license

    • an insurance agent or producer license carrying the Credit line of authority in another state

K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (a)(1) covers somebody previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state, while that license is current or if the application arrives within 90 days of its cancellation with good standing certified by the other state or shown in the NAIC producer database.

  4. Route 4 Move to Kansas and apply within 90 days

No state exam for this license

    • 90 days Licensed as an insurance agent in another state carrying the Credit line of authority there, and applying to become a Kansas resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence.

K.S.A. 40-4908, and note how it is drafted: the Producer Licensing Model Act writes these exemptions as a list of people no examination is required of, and Kansas writes the same exemptions as a duty on the regulator, "the commissioner shall waive examinations for". Subsection (b) covers moving here: somebody licensed as an agent in another state who moves to Kansas shall apply to become a resident licensee within 90 days of establishing legal residence, and no person previously authorized for any line of authority shall be examined here for the same line except as the commissioner requires by rule and regulation.

A course is required and nobody sells one

The one course attached to this line belongs to the appointing insurer to give its own people, under K.S.A. 40-4905(e), and no school can sell it: the statute says the insurer "shall provide a program of instruction" to each individual employed by or acting on behalf of it. Kansas gives no credit paper either, so there is no examination to prepare for. No seller carries a Kansas product for this line.
