The Illinois Temporary Producer license

Temporary Producer

Not a way into the business. Illinois issues its temporary license to a dead or disabled producer's survivor, to a business entity whose designated individual has died, and to the designee of a producer called up to the armed forces, so it exists to keep somebody else's book alive rather than to let a beginner start selling.

  1. Route 1 Stand in for a producer who has died, become disabled or been called up

    No state exam for this license

    • The surviving spouse or court-appointed personal representative of a licensed producer who dies or becomes a person with a mental or physical disability, to allow time to sell the business, for the producer to return to it, or to train and license new staff to run it.

    • or

      A member or employee of a business entity licensed as an insurance producer, on the death or disability of an individual designated in the entity's application or license.

    • or

      The designee of a licensed insurance producer entering active service in the armed forces of the United States.

    215 ILCS 5/500-60(a): 180 days, renewable once for another 180 at the Director's discretion, with no examination, and only where the Director "deems that the temporary license is necessary for the servicing of an insurance business". 500-60(b) lets the Director limit the authority by order, require a suitable sponsor who is a licensed producer or insurer and who assumes responsibility for everything the temporary licensee does, and revoke the license if insureds or the public are endangered; it also ends the license the moment the owner or the personal representative disposes of the business. The fee is paid once, on the original license and not on the renewal.

No national seller sells a course for this license. Nothing could be sold against it: the Director issues it without an examination to a named successor, and the qualification is a relationship to a producer rather than anything the applicant can study for.
