Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 40-hour course

    State exam required

    • 40 hours of pre-licensing education for the Property (Public Adjuster) line, approved by the Department

Conn. Gen. Stat. section 38a-788(b): a course approved by the commissioner of not less than forty hours covering property insurance policies and forms, proved before the applicant is admitted to the examination. A producer selling the same property line owes twenty, so Connecticut asks a public adjuster for twice the education it asks the person who sold the policy.

  2. Route 2 Take the course having held the same Connecticut license in the last two years

    Exempt from the state exam

    Pre-licensing education

    • 40 hours of pre-licensing education covering property insurance policies and forms, approved by the Department

    and recent license

    • A Connecticut public adjuster license of the same type, held at any time in the two years before the application

Conn. Gen. Stat. section 38a-788(a)(2) lets the commissioner waive the examination for an applicant licensed in Connecticut under a license of the same type within the preceding two years. Two years here against one for a producer under section 38a-702e(f). It waives the examination and not the forty hours, which section 38a-788(b) attaches to the applicant rather than to the exam. Connecticut puts every one of these in the commissioner's hands rather than in a form: the statute says the applicant has to prove the ground to the commissioner's satisfaction, or that the commissioner may waive, so none of them is automatic.
