Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the Motor Vehicle Physical Damage Appraiser paper

    State exam required

The Department states the zero on this license's page, "Connecticut does not require pre-licensing education for this license type", and says in the same breath that the license "requires a written exam". The paper is 12-CT-16, one hour, $120, against $65 for a producer paper and $70 for an adjuster paper. The Department publishes an examination content outline and points at the statutes and regulations, and says nothing else is issued to study from. No continuing education, and no fingerprints.

  2. Route 2 Hold an equivalent appraiser license in another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • An equivalent motor vehicle physical damage appraiser license in any other state

The Department grants reciprocity with an equivalent license in any state, and issues non-resident designated home state status to somebody who lives in a state with no appraiser licensing at all. Conn. Gen. Stat. 38a-790 is the granting section.
