Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination, a designation already held or a license already held.

  1. Route 1 Pass the Property and Casualty consultant paper

    State exam required

The Department states the zero in its own words, "No pre-licensing course is required before taking the Certified Insurance Consultant (CIC) exam". The paper is 12-CT-06, Property and Casualty Certified Insurance Consultant, $76 and two and a half hours, and it is a different paper from the life consultant's, which is why this is a separate license file rather than a line on one.

  2. Route 2 Hold a designation the Commissioner accepts in place of the paper

    Exempt from the state exam

    • CPCU Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, from The Institutes

    • or

CIC Certified Insurance Counselor, from The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research

    • or

AAI Accredited Advisor in Insurance, from The Institutes

Conn. Gen. Stat. 38a-786(a) lets the commissioner waive the examination for the designations named, and the waiver is a request rather than an automatic exemption: the Department asks for a letter from the professional society dated within the last ninety days, emailed to cid.licensing@ct.gov with the NIPR transaction number and the national producer number. The statute carries a limb the Department's page and the examination vendor's handbook both leave out, and it is the widest of the three: an applicant holding the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter and the Chartered Life Underwriter together is waived for every line of insurance rather than for the one the designation belongs to.

  3. Route 3 Have held the same Connecticut license within the last two years

    Exempt from the state exam

    • A Connecticut certified insurance consultant license of the same type, held at any time in the two years before the application

Conn. Gen. Stat. 38a-786(a), last sentence, and the same two-year window the life consultant gets.

No national seller sells anything named for the Connecticut property and casualty consultant paper. A.D. Banker sells three Connecticut "Consultant/Counselor" products and every one of them is a life or health product, so none prepares anybody for 12-CT-06. The state's own register carries no consultant category at all, which follows from the license needing no approved course.
